The costumes for the otherworldly characters in Doctor Strange was handled by Oscar Award-winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne ("Elizabeth: The Golden Age"). She created the Mordo costumes and the Ancient One costumes to reflect the Kamar Taj structure. The novices wore gray clothes as did masters and disciples. The latter were able to wear blue. Byrne layered fabrics to make the Cloak Of Levitation a sculptural look than just being something which Strange wears.



When Mark Waid relaunched Doctor Strange in the 90s, he went with a less formal look which was based on the Cloak of Levitation to create the costume. The result was an outfit that looked like it was worn by a superhero and not the magician.


When the character embarks on his journey towards enlightenment and absolute power, his clothing subtlely represents key moments within the story. This is an essential aspect of the designing process in that it demonstrates the emotional transformation that Stephen Strange undergoes.


When he starts his journey wearing elegant, well-maintained and expensive clothes that reflect his professional standing and self-confidence, his appearance soon changes. His clothes are more practical and less flashy. They also get darker. But his clothes don't only reflect his an upscale sense of style and humour.
