Known for its turquoise waters and stunning coral reefs, the Daymaniyat Islands are a nature reserve that protect endangered sea turtles and host a diversity of exotic fish. A popular choice for scuba divers, the Daymaniyat Islands are one of Oman’s leading dive spots.
A visit to the Daymaniyat Islands is a must for anyone planning on visiting Oman. Although there are many other great places to dive in Oman (such as Bander Khayran and Fahal Island) the Daymaniyat Islands are unique as they are protected, giving the area a feeling of being a pristine marine wilderness.
The 9 rocky islands of the Daymaniyat Islands are home to numerous marine species including Green and Hawksbill turtles that nest on the beaches, as well as the migratory birds who visit them every year. The islands are also a major habitat for the local and exotic fish that thrive in the waters around them, including the Omani Cuttlefish, Honeycomb Moray Eel, Blacktip Reef Shark, Arabian Butterflyfish, Spotfin Porcupinefish, Bluespotted Ribbontail Ray, and the Black Sea Urchin.
With the exception of old fishing nets, there is hardly any trash to be found on these pristine islands. This is a sign of the great care taken by the Omani Government to protect the marine environment and wildlife of the Daymaniyat Islands.
The snorkeling and diving sites at the Daymaniyat Islands are perfect for all levels of divers, from beginners to advanced. The rocky reefs are adorned with hard and soft corals and can be home to a variety of fish. The shallows are home to the frisky Yellow/Orange and Black Arabian Butterflyfish, while the deeper waters can be a great place to spot a Leopard Shark or Zebra shark.
If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the magnificent Whale Shark at the Daymaniyat Islands, from July to September. These filter-feeders are a beautiful sight to see, with their long, slender bodies and a blazingly beautiful tail.
Snorkelling trips to the Daymaniyat Islands run daily from a few different dive operators based in Muscat, including Extra Divers in Al Sawadi and Global Scuba. They are listed as half-day excursions, returning to Muscat at 2pm but it is recommended that you set aside a full day if you’re lucky enough to find yourself amongst the whale sharks, so you have plenty of time to explore. The price of the trip includes the permit to enter the marine reserve, lunch and snorkelling equipment. Scuba diving in daymaniyat islands
