Relocation Strategies 101 - Be Open to Trying New Things
The capability to most probably and optimistic about trying new things is vital to successfully transitioning to a new culture.

You may find yourself someplace with very different resources, and activities. The more open you are to benefiting from the new resources, or to approaching things in a new way, the happier you will end up.

For example, in the event that you live in a big city with lots of public transportation, and you also move to a suburb where you depend on a car, you're going to have to adjust to driving everywhere you go. Conversely, if you depend on your car, and find yourself in a bustling metropolis, you need to adjust to taking a bus or train instead. On the bright side, don’t worry about parking, gas fees, and tickets!

If you are a gym fanatic, and accustomed to going several times weekly to the area just outside, and now the closest gym is several towns away, it may be an activity you will need to change. Think about finding exercise elsewhere? Perhaps there is a nature trail by your home so you can hike, or, maybe the restaurant that's a mile later on offers you an opportunity to walk backwards and forwards once a day.

You will possibly not have considered yourself a "joiner", however when you move someplace new, it's helpful, or even necessary, to make friendships, to join at least several local organizations. Look for a Chamber of Commerce or perhaps a charity that's of interest, and visit the next few meetings. Joining a volunteer organization is another excellent resource. You can find out about, and help, the neighborhood community, while meeting new people. I simply can't stress enough that joining local organizations and charity is paramount to your transition success!

Trying Additional hints is also something that can make your life a lot more satisfying after a relocation. And, when I say new activities, they might be things you've never thought of doing before. Here's a good example. When I visited live with a bunch family in France, I had visions in my head of some trendy family, with cool fashion sense, a neat house, maybe a dog, and eating awesome French food. So, I was shocked when my host mom drove around the front of her house and I found myself living on a farm in Normandie. Me, a New York City gal, on a farm! They took me out back, suited me up in a few boots, and I milked my first cow. I loved it! Then, I came across myself with a pet cow for the summer, Amazonie, who would follow me around as an overgrown puppy and lick me every chance she got. Ever since then, I visit as much cows as I can find, and I've met many wonderful people by speaking with them about their cows. I could have kicked and screamed and resisted, but when you are open to an activity I would never have done in NEW YORK, I gained a new interest, had fun, and also got treated to secret strawberry milkshakes with two of my host sisters!

Being open to friendships with completely different people is also essential to your culture transition success. Though we typically yearn for exact replicas of friends back home, it's unlikely we'll find these duplicates whenever we move. It is helpful to have a couple of friends from the same country or city as you, these are the people which could understand best what you're going right through. However, they are also the people most likely to leave and relocate again. So, you would like to make sure that you open your arms to acquiring buddies from your host city or country. In the event that you look past your different backgrounds, you can begin to focus on the things you have as a common factor; perhaps loving similar foods or activities, and you could create the foundation for a fresh friendship around these common points.

Wherever it really is you move, there's bound to be many differences. In NY, we tend to socialize in bars, restaurants, and clubs. In other, more rural areas, socializing tends to revolve round the home. So, the more you can welcome local customs, and become open to trying new things, the easier you'll make your transition.
