Crux Decussata Project
Crux Decussata was the familiar lower case t-shaped structure upon which, according to Scripture and tradition, our Lord, Jesus Christ was crucified. It consisted of a vertical stake into which was inserted a horizontal cross beam. It has been a common symbol of Christianity since its origin.

Although scholars know that the words stauros and crucix had different meanings in Koine Greek, and that gibbets had many shapes, Christians of the early periods are unanimous in describing the particular structure on which Jesus died as a cross with transom, not as a simple upright stake. They did not consider this to be necessarily wrong.

In the middle ages, it was customary to paint crosses in the shape of a crucifix on church towers to ward off evil spirits. These were usually referred to as boundary crosses, but they may well have been decorative friezes like this one of four rounded trefoils on each square (the crests of the letters T and C). The crosses are also shaped like St Andrew’s cross, perhaps because they resembled the crutch that the Apostle is generally depicted carrying. Catholic X They are not boundary crosses in the strict sense, but they do invoke Christ and his 12 disciples.
