Why Right To Choose Psychiatry UK Isn't As Easy As You Think
psychiatrist fees uk to Choose Psychiatry uk

As a patient, you have the legal right to choose the place you're referred to for your treatment. consultant psychiatrist uk is applicable to services that are commissioned or led by CCGs and NHS England, as well as consultant-led elective treatments.

Psychiatry-UK offers ADHD, Autism and combined assessments under the NHS right to choose. This enables those with long NHS waiting lists to make use of their right to choose a provider and reduce the time they wait for an assessment.

What is the right to choose?

The right to choose psychiatry within the UK is a fundamental legal right that allows patients to make decisions about their health care. This applies to many services including assessments and treatment. If a person has been diagnosed with a condition like ADHD and has been advised to select an alternative NHS provider than the one that is in their community. This can be useful for a variety of reasons, such as travel restrictions, or when a patient wishes to consult a specialist regarding their condition.

The legal right to choice is currently in effect at the time of referral by a primary care doctor to make the first appointment with an outpatient for a mental or physical health condition. It only applies to providers who are medically appropriate and have a contract for commissioning with the CCG or NHS England (host commissioner) for the service.

For example, if a person is referred to their local NHS Trust for an ADHD diagnosis they are likely to be referred to a local mental health clinic which can take more than two years for a first appointment. However, if the person has the right to choose they can choose to be referred to an online ADHD diagnosis service such as Psychiatry UK that can provide a quicker route to a diagnosis.

This is a positive step that will increase access to mental health services in the UK. It can be a hassle to wait for an assessment and then treatment. However, there are also many obstacles in enhancing access and delivery of psychiatry services in the UK. These include a shortage of consultants and a drive to increase the number of people who are seeking to join the field.

If a GP wishes to refer a patient to the Psychiatry-UK for an online ADHD assessment in accordance with the lawful right to choose they will need to write a short letter in which they explain the reason. The letter should be directed directly to Psychiatry UK and include the GP’s name at the end of the page (not ANP). The letter should also include a brief medical summary of the patient, as well as the completed AQ50 form (click for template). The Psychiatry UK will contact the patient's GP to get more details.

Who is eligible to have the right to choose?

In England If your GP has recommended you to a consultant-led team of mental health professionals for assessment or treatment and you are eligible, you could be eligible to apply for Right to Choose. This includes a neurodevelopmental diagnostic assessment for ADHD or Autism. It doesn't include other NHS services like psychotherapy, counselling or psychiatric medication. You cannot be a member of the Armed Forces or in a secure setting (such as a prison, specialized training centre or a young offenders' institution or an immigration removal centre).

In order to exercise your right to decide, you must been referred by your doctor to an NHS provider that has been commissioned to provide the service. The service provided must be clinically appropriate for your needs. Psychiatry UK is currently able to provide ADHD assessments through Right to Choose for adults and children up to age 19. These appointments are in person. They can however, offer a private ADHD assessment for children and adults if you would prefer an online appointment. They can also provide the titration of medications following an assessment. However, this service is not available via RTC.

It is very important that you let your GP know that you'd like to exercise your right to select. You can download a referral form from a variety of Right to Choose providers and give it to your GP. The letter provides the information they require to make an appointment. Click here to download a copy from Psychiatry UK.

How can I exercise my right to choose?

In the majority of cases the event that a GP refers you for specialist mental health care, you have the legal right to choose the doctor for your care. You will not be penalized by the NHS when you decide to go to an private hospital than if a GP has referred you to one. You can exercise your right to choose a patient service or provider that has a NHS Standard Contract with any CCG, NHS England or any CCG for the service required (this includes many hospitals). You are not able to use your right to choose to use cancer services that have a maximum two-week waiting period for maternity services, mental health services provided by the armed services.

In a survey of intending psychiatrists conducted in the first, three, and five years following medical school 4 percent of respondents opted for psychiatry as their first career choice. When comparing this number to doctors who opted for other careers in clinical this was comparable to the 3-4 percent of Americans who chose psychiatry. The figures were higher for women than males. This reflects a historical trend of women choosing to become psychiatrists.

The factors that influence psychiatrists' decision to pursue psychiatry for a career are many. Of these, 'enthusiasm/commitment: what I really want to do' was the factor rated as having most influence by over half of respondents in year one. 'Student experience of the subject','self-appraisal of own skills' and 'inclinations before medical school' were also cited as having a significant effect on choice.

Psychiatry UK can offer an independent assessment for those who suffer from ADHD. Their GP might refer them to Psychiatry UK using the NHS Right to Choose. A specialist ADHD doctor will provide an assessment and a titration of medication. The GP can find more details regarding this, including a download letter to distribute to their patients.

For other conditions such as OCD for instance, you must only exercise your Right to Choose only if your GP has suggested an assessment by a specialist mental health practitioner and you were discharged from that service. Your GP can ask for an appointment from the specialist mental health service to Psychiatry UK, and we can then provide an independent assessment and titration of any medication prescribed.

What if I don't want to make a decision?

You do not have to make a decision if you choose not to. However, if you do you must understand the implications of doing so. If you decide not to take advantage of your right to decide, it will have an impact on the speed of your appointment and the type of service you get. This will also impact your choices in the future when you are referred to another.

If you decide not to exercise your right to choose, it's crucial to inform your GP straight away. They should then recommend a treatment that's the best fit for your requirements. It might take a bit longer to get an appointment but if it's the proper thing to do it's worth it.

You can request your GP to write to Psychiatry UK to see if they offer an online ADHD assessment. The website has information on how to go about this and also a letter that you can download and present to your GP. The service is available to both children and adults but they don't offer titration for medication through the NHS following an assessment. They can currently provide an assessment to patients in Kent and Medway as in addition to Isle of Wight and North East Hampshire.
