Tonic-clonic seizures can be a life-threatening event. People who have them often experience a loss of consciousness for a few minutes. Some people also experience abnormal sensations or a loss of muscle tone.

Tonic clonic seizures can be treated with medication. But you should keep in mind that some medications have the potential to cause other seizures. So be sure to follow your doctor's instructions for taking the medicines.
In addition to taking medication, you should make a plan for safe recovery. For example, if you feel a person is about to have a tonic clonic seizure, make sure they are placed on their side. This will reduce the chances of aspiration.
If you have had a tonic clonic seizure before, you might be able to identify certain signs that can help you recognize if it is happening again. It's not a bad idea to write down what happened, too. That way, you can tell others.
