Right to Choose is a legal right given to patients by the NHS in England to be able to choose their own clinical team for non-urgent consultant-led treatment. This includes the field of psychiatry. However, it does not apply to services provided by local authorities, such as maternity services or community mental health services.

Referrals from your GP are required for the option to select a service. It must be a registered doctor with the General Medical Council. You can determine which doctors are registered with the GMC by looking up their details on the NHS website.

A lot of them specialize in a specific area such as anxiety disorders or depression. Some specialize in certain age groups like teenagers and older people. Some of these companies offer e-consultations that are conducted on the internet via video conferencing or emails.

Patients are generally directed to a specialist within their CCG (Community and Care Partnership, formerly CCG) catchment area. But they can also request to be referred to a different provider when they have an open electronic referral with their GP and the referring doctor agrees to it. This is known as a 'virtual GP referral.

Psychiatry is a study of mental illness, its causes, its diagnosis and treatment. It involves the use medication and other methods such as psychotherapy. It is a highly specialised field, which involves complex knowledge and a lot of skill. The majority of NHS services in England are provided by clinical commissioning groups (CCGs). These organisations are responsible to provide NHS services within their local area. CCGs have a legal obligation to ensure that they meet national standards of healthcare for patients. They are also legally bound to respect the rights and preferences of patients. However, there are some cases when a patient's choice of a provider is not properly implemented. In these instances, the patient must first talk to their GP to discuss the issue.

If the GP refuses to refer the patient to a specialist, then the patient may contact the local group of commissioning for health to complain about the decision. The CCG will investigate the complaint and decide which action to take. The patient might also be able to request an independent complaint advocate who can support them through the process.

Right to Choose allows GPs to refer patients to specialist treatment, including psychotherapy, medication, and other medications under the NHS. They can refer patients to any provider that has a standard contract with the CCG or NHS England. However, a GP can only do this when they and the patient accept the procedure. The GP must explain this to the patient, and submit an Individual Funding Request (IFR) to their commissioner in order to obtain prior approval.

To understand how GPs make referral decisions, the TAG team conducted a series of facilitated focus group sessions with GPs and MHPs at eight different GP practices. The conversations were recorded and transcribed exactly. In general, GPs are reluctant to refer patients to a psychotherapist or for medication. They were concerned that patients might not be able cope with the additional treatment and might not attend follow-up sessions. Many GPs were also of the opinion that liaison psychiatry had inadequate resources and was oversubscribed.

The findings of this study revealed that GPs rely more on pre-existing relationships and their knowledge when making referral decisions than they do on the specific needs of a patient. This was evident in all of the recorded meetings. CMHT leaders, Psychiatrists, and GPs all expressed their opinions on the competence of GPs. This was evident in every meeting taped.

It is important to keep in mind that the right to choose applies to both treatments and assessments, including neurodevelopmental diagnostic assessment. Psychiatry UK is one of the biggest providers of NHS and private ADHD assessments. The current pandemic is causing an unprecedented increase in number people who are referred to mental health services within communities to seek assistance. This has resulted in an increase in the demand for psychiatry assessments and an increase in the workload of staff. The rapid onset of the pandemic meant it was difficult for doctors and other healthcare professionals to keep up with the number of referrals. This led to many inappropriate referrals.

In response, we conducted a qualitative study nested within an experimental study that used randomised control to explore the effectiveness of a variety of strategies designed to improve the quality of referrals to mental health. Interviews with GPs as well as community mental health team consultants (CMHT) were conducted, as was the recording of meetings to aid in the allocation of referrals. The results of the study proved that the use of a custom referral pathway was an effective way to manage the workload of GPs as well as CMHTs as well as providing patients with the choice they require to be effectively treated.
