This hack impacted over 200 organizations and around 17.5 million users around this time.
Amongst those affected were multiple federal and governmental agencies such as the Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Health and Human Services.
Tons of schools and other educational organizations across the United States were also targeted by the attack.
On top of this, even more breaches have been confirmed since with companies such as Shell, Siemens Energy, Schneider Electric, First Merchants Bank, City National Bank, and even a number of international targets.
The attack originated from a security vulnerability in MOVEit's software. While MOVEit patched the flaw once they found it, malicious hackers had already gained access to a ton of sensitive data. A Russian ransomware group named Clop have claimed responsibility for the breaches and have also threatened to publish the stolen information on the dark web.
