Expat Health Insurance - What You Should Know
Expat health insurance provides international expats with immediate and extended medical care; flexible coverage options; good package and quality treatment; and extended coverage to cater for all expats specific medical requirements while they are living outside of the country for long periods of time. It is important to remember that while expatriate healthcare in its essence is designed to provide adequate, appropriate and affordable health care to expatriates it is also designed to be flexible to fit the expatriate's lifestyle and circumstances.

Expat healthcare policies offer a variety of services and options that can benefit both expatriate citizens and expatriate expatriates. While expatriate healthcare is primarily geared toward providing basic medical services to expatriates living abroad, some policies also cover long-term or permanent expatriate health care and benefits.

Health insurance plans that cover long term health care generally pay a higher premium than other health insurance plans. The main reason for this premium is because long term health care typically involves medical visits to specialized doctors who are often expensive to hire and pay for. Also, long term health care often involves being prescribed medicines for which there are no generic alternatives available or where the price per dose is more costly than for other prescriptions.

In some cases, a policy might cover a doctor's visit but not a prescription drug. For this reason it is important to read carefully the fine print in an expatriate health insurance policy and to check with your expatriate employer on whether you are covered for prescription drugs. Most expatriate employers have a written policy covering prescription drugs for expatriates living abroad are expected to follow this policy.

Expatriate health insurance may also include cover for long-term care or a policy might cover only emergency health care. Emergency health care covers a wide range of basic medical services such as doctor visits, medication refill, hospital stays and other basic care services. In the case of emergency or serious illness or injury a policy might also cover medical evacuation out of the country and back to the home country, or even into the United States or Canada, or to a specialist's clinic abroad.

For most expatriate health insurance plans, emergency care includes only emergency hospital stays. The cost of care during the emergency period will be higher than normal care because the policy covers the cost of a stay longer than five days. Emergency hospital stays, however, are also covered during the period when a patient is admitted to the hospital for routine treatment, or after the five day period at the maximum period permitted by the hospital.

The costs of medical evacuation outside the country will vary depending on the expatriate health insurance policy, the destination, the length of stay, and the expatriate healthcare program. If a policy covers all or some of the expenses for a single trip outside the country, the benefits may be limited to the amount of the travel savings.

However, these types of trips should only be undertaken after a thorough investigation has been carried out to verify that the chosen provider of expatriate healthcare is qualified and reputable.
