Lambeth Windows
Lambeth windows are a form of Sash window. They are generally made of wood, and the design is influenced by the design and architectural features of the building. The sash windows in St Margaret's Church, Lambeth, Kent, have a simple, symmetrical look with the central panel being made of stained glass.
Pedlar's Window
The Pedlar's Window can be bit misleading since the pedlar was 17th century pedlar and not an actual one. He was a gentleman with the name of Henry Smith. In actual fact He was a generous donor of many, one of which was his charitable contributions. The current County Hall inherited his lands.
Despite his generosity the Pedlar was not the only benefactor to grace St Mary's Church's halls. In the 13th and 14th centuries this was not the situation. The Pedlar of Swaffham was actually sheltered by a local priest. After a successful and prosperous life, he pledged to donate his land to the church. If everything went well, he would even lend his hand if necessary.
One of the things that has stood the test of time is Pedlar's Window. The first stained glass window was erected in 1500. It was later replaced the middle of the 19th century. Unfortunately, the original glass was destroyed in the course of a World War II bombing raid. The window has been preserved by gifts, donations, and an office.
There are a few less well-known and more prestigious places to visit in the Lambeth area. Lambeth Abbey and St James Park are some of the most well-known tourist attractions. These are all worth a visit. However, if you're looking to find something a less obscure and less well-known, you can visit St Mary's Church and Pedlar's park. The park is situated outside of the city's main area and is a great spot to relax and enjoy the natural beauty and history as well as a feeling of wonder. The Salamanca open area was named after the 1812 Battle of Salamanca in Spain It is also situated in Pedlar's Park.
King's College Chapel
The King's College Chapel has a collection of medieval stained glass windows. Some of the windows are quite impressive. One window depicts the Crucifixion spread across three lights.
The King's College Chapel's windows are the place where the northern Renaissance style reached its peak. This could be due to Sir Christopher Wren, the great architect. Each side of the chapel is adorned with twelve large windows. These windows are mostly composed of scenes from both the Old and New Testament.
The largest portion of glass painted in the church is found in the west window of the nave. It is also among the most striking. It is an extraordinary window that not only shows the Crucifixion but also has a profound significance.
The window was donated by Francis Stacey, a King's alumnus. Daniel Hyde is currently the director of the music of this choir. Since 1982, he's been the director of the choir.
The north wall houses figures from the Old Testament as well as the New Testament. The north wall features the Gospel writers, Mary the mother of our Lord, Moses and Aaron.
Other windows of significance are located in the ante-chapel. The Rood screen contains biblical scenes, including images of King Solomon and the young woman in profile. A screen was constructed in Westminster Abbey during Henry VII and VIII's reign. Many of the interlocking H's and HR's are symbolic.
A second window, dating from the early 18th century was requested by Bishop John Russell of Lincoln. This window is the only one of its kind. Another, in Stamford St. Martin's Church, was also commissioned.
While a few of the other Lambeth windows in the King's College Chapel were destroyed during the Second World War, it appears that the original window has survived.
St. Margaret's
St Margaret's Cathedral, in Lambeth, England, is an Gothic structure with a huge tower that is located near Parliament Square. It was rebuilt in 1499-1500. It is divided into 20 windows and the clearstory.
The east window of the church contains glass that was used prior to the Reformation. The window is dated to c.1525. Hunt's window shows a crucifixion as well as the Cross over three lights. It is part of the northern Renaissance style.
Robert Hunt's window is amongst the best in the city. The window was erected during the reconstruction of St Margaret's Cathedral. It is possible that he wasn't the sole donor. Other donors may have paid for the glass and its transportation.
The exact dates of the Lambeth windows are not known, but they aren't the first to have been glassed in England. There are some references to the accounts of the churchwardens. Hunt might have ordered the glaziers. It is possible that they were working in partnership with other donors.
Hunt's window is a wonderful example of the personalization of the church space in the late medieval period of England. The images are a combination of scriptures and stories from both the Old Testament and the New Testaments. Hunt and his family are depicted.
The image also includes 12 named saints. Some saints are known, but the others are not so well-known. Hunt's personal preferences aside, the imagery is a reflection of Hunt's devotional beliefs.
Hunt's window is mentioned in the accounts of churchwardens in the year 1500. His motives and intentions is not known. However, his will offers an explanation for the lack of glaziers' mentions in parish records. Furthermore, his will suggests that glazing in the late medieval church may have been financed by individuals, not by a corporation.
Croydon chapel
The Chapel of St Margaret's, Croydon was renovated in the 18th century. It has five side windows. The west window has a tiny blocked light. This has probably been inserted at the time of Archbishop Bourchier.
The south wall contains Old Testament figures such as Moses, Aaron, and David. Mary Magdalene is also present.
Four Gospel writers are located in the north wall. A doorway is also located in the north wall of the west wall.
The east window is engraved with Roman capitals. Near the upper corner is a small niche with a a modern grate. Two keys in saltires are situated above the window.
Another window in the chapel has vertical tracery. The oriel window has the ogee-moulded jambs. In the original design, there were four lights inside the head with four centers. However, lock repair lambeth is now blocked.
A doorway in the north end of the west is decorated with a leaf motif. The basement partition is constructed from stone. The fireplace in the small space is four-centred and moulded.
The long gallery that runs along the eastern wall appears to be half-timbered. A staircase dating to the 17th century is found on the upper part of the west wall. The ceiling is supported by moulded joists.
The apse houses stained glass windows designed by George Gilbert Scott. There are two smaller windows in this nave. One of them has modern clock faces. These windows have oak frames that are similar to the ones on the exterior elevations.
The chapel was rebuilt by Archbishop Bourchier. He extended the chapel to the east and added a block of timber to the connecting block. He also repaired the fabric after the Commonwealth. During his time there was an enormous expansion of buildings on the hill.
