Tonic seizure is characterized by a stiffening of a particular body part. It can be caused by brain tumors, head injuries, and ruptured blood vessels in the brain.

Focal tonic-clonic seizures are seizures that involve the arm and face of one side of the body. These types of seizures are rare. Another common type is the astonic-absence seizure, which is an absence of tonic posturing.
A 38-year-old man had a primary generalized tonic-clonic seizure and secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures. He also had epileptic spasms on the right side of his body. His EEG recorded a polyspike-wave complex that was 1.6-3.4 Hz, which slowed down towards the end of the seizure.
Clonic seizures are common in focal epilepsy. They occur in approximately 57% of frontal lobe epilepsy patients. One study found that the majority of patients with focal clonic seizures were preceded by a focal tonic seizure.
