What is a Tonic Clonic Absence Seizure?
When the brain's electrical activity changes, a person experiences a seizure. This can cause a range of symptoms, from blank stares to muscle stiffening and uncontrollable jerking movements. If you are experiencing a seizure, you should make sure that you have someone nearby.

During a tonic clonic absence seizure, the body's muscles become tense and rigid. You may also feel tired and confused. At the start of a tonic clonic absence seizure, you may have trouble breathing. Seizure Alarms Alternatively, you may have a headache or a memory loss.

These seizures are typically diagnosed with electroencephalography (EEG) or other medical tests. The EEG can show the area of the brain where the seizures begin. Your doctor may prescribe medication, nerve stimulation, or surgery.

Symptoms of a tonic clonic absence epilepsy are usually temporary. After the initial seizure, you can normally expect to wake up and continue with your normal activities. Until the seizure has completely stopped, you should be careful not to put anything in your mouth or put your head down.

Seizures can happen at any age. But they are most common in children. In fact, it has been found that nearly half of all children with absence epilepsy have at least one family member who has a history of seizures.

Typically, these seizures last less than three minutes, though they can occur several times in a day. They are characterized by jerking or twitching movements that affect the face, arms, and legs.
