Tonic and clonic movements are a common type of seizures. These seizures are caused by sudden and involuntary muscular contractions. The movements can be either short or long and can happen in both the right and left hemispheres. They are also referred to as convulsive seizures.
The symptoms of tonic and clonic seizures are usually related to muscle stiffness and difficulty breathing. People who experience this type of seizure may feel exhausted and sad. They also may have difficulty remembering things. If a person experiences this type of seizure, they should call 911.
People who are experiencing a tonic-clonic seizure should keep track of how long the episode lasts. If the seizure lasts for more than 5 minutes, call the emergency number immediately.

There are three types of tonic-clonic seizures: simple partial, complex partial, and generalized. Each one has different causes and symptoms. Seizures can be treated with medications or surgery.
The most common form of tonic-clonic seizures is known as generalized tonic-clonic (GTC) seizures. This type of epilepsy affects 90% of patients. It can cause the muscles to jerk repeatedly, resulting in headaches and fatigue.
Another type of tonic-clonic seizures is known a myoclonic-tonic-clonic (MTC) seizures. Myoclonic-tonic-clonic seizures are more common in males, and they can occur before age 5. Usually, a person experiences the first myoclonic seizures during adolescence.
