Former President of Singapore Mr S R Nathan was born in Singapore on 3 July 1924, he was the youngest of 2 older brothers. website , V Sellapan committed suicide as a result of mounting debt as a result of Great Depression in 1930s. Mr S R Nathan was only eight years old at that time.
As a kid, Mr S R Nathan received his primary school education in Anglo-Chinese Primary School and Rangoon Road Afternoon School. After primary school, Mr S R Nathan progressed to Victoria School. As a result of Japanese Occupation during World War II, he didn't complete his secondary education. Nevertheless, he were able to complete his secondary education and made further progress in his education. Eventually, he graduated from the University of Malaya with a distinction in Diploma in Social Studies.

Mr S R Nathan started his civil service career as a medical social worker in 1955. He rose through his career to be the deputy secretary in Ministry of Foreign Affairs, followed by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1966. Between 1979 to 1982, Mr S R Nathan served in the Foreign Ministry as the First Permanent Secretary. He took a rest from civil service and used various director positions in high-profile local companies such as Singapore Mint and Singapore Press Holdings.

The Former President served as Singapore's High Commissioner to Malaysia followed by Singapore's Ambassador to america between April 1988 to June 1996. In August 1999, Mr S R Nathan was initially elected because the President of Singapore, to date he is the first President to possess served two terms of his Presidency. He left the President's office on 1 September 2011 and his successor is current President of Singapore, Mr Tony Tan.

Mr S R Nathan's health took a turn for the worse as he suffered a stroke in July 2016. On 22 August 2016, the Former President passed on abandoning his wife Urmila Nandi, their daughter Juthika and son Osith, and three grandchildren.

1.The Laju incident that happened 42 years back should be the among the most remembered event in the annals of Singapore. Mr S R Nathan was among the band of government officials who volunteered to be taken hostage and flew to Kuwait to secure the release of civilian hostages held by terrorist group Japanese Red Army and the Popular Front for the Liberation. The event demonstrated the bravery inside the Former President.

2.Mr S R Nathan served as ambassador to america through the Michael Fay incident in 1994. Under great pressure from United States and the united states President-then Bill Clinton, our Former President handled international pressure firmly and diplomatically.

3.The President's Challenge was founded in 2000 by the Former President. Already into its 17th year, this yearly project has raised over $100 million for over 500 beneficiaries.

4.At the height of the Global FINANCIAL MELTDOWN in 2009 2009, Mr S R Nathan became the initial president to approve the usage of the country's reserve to fund new measures that brought Singapore out of recession swiftly.

5.He is the only President that has been honoured with the Order of Temasek (1st Class). The other 2 recipients are Mr Suppiah Dhanabalan (Former Chairman, Temasek Holdings) and Mr Yong Pung How ( Chief Justice, Supreme Court).
