Nocturnal Seizures in Epilepsy
Night time seizures are a common part of the life of people with epilepsy. They can cause a person to feel tired and weak the next day, which can lead to difficulty with concentration and learning as well as emotions and behaviour.
Having seizures during the night can also be dangerous. It can increase a patient’s risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP).

There are some devices for detecting nocturnal seizures that work by monitoring heart rate and movement during sleep. These are called portable pulse oximeters. They can measure your heart rate and blood oxygenation percentage, two of the things that are affected during a seizure.
Emfit Epilepsy Alarm Devices like the Embrace2 from Empatica are designed to detect and alert for tonic-clonic (convulsive) seizures after 20 seconds. These devices send the data to a smartphone via a Bluetooth connection. They can also alert others when certain seizure types occur.
Another device that is marketed is the Nightwatch from Livassured, which uses heart rate and motion estimated from a pacing pulse generator (PPG) and an accelerometer to automatically detect seizures with major motor components. This device was tested by the Dutch epilepsy centres SEIN and Kempenhaeghe over thousands of nights and was found to be able to detect 96% of clinically urgent nocturnal seizures.
