College football fans will have plenty to look forward to this weekend as the 2023 FCS national championship game, Division II and III semifinal games and award contenders showcase themselves during a big week for Heisman Trophy candidates and other award considerations. Division I
The NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), or Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, is the premier level of college football competition in America. FBS includes all 129 public and private universities that offer college football programs nationwide - 2023 will mark 153rd consecutive season at this level!
Division I teams compete to win a national title through NCAA playoffs, culminating with the College Football Playoff National Championship at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The top four ranked teams receive automatic entry into playoffs. College Football Playoffs of final four games claim the College Football Playoff National Championship title.
College football fans are experiencing an unpredictable and thrilling time thanks to upsets and routs which have upended rankings, leading to new discussions regarding how the tournament selection process works - with some coaches advocating for changes to how the top four spots are determined.
Georgia continues to lead the national rankings despite suffering three regular-season defeats to TCU and Ohio State; Michigan rose up the ladder, while TCU from unranked all the way to No. 3.
Even though most top-ranked teams were expected to make the playoffs, not everything went according to plan for SEC powerhouses. Ohio State fell from its preseason ranking and struggled to remain in the top four throughout the season; Georgia battled TCU for top honors until season's end and eventually claimed it as its own No. 1.
The FCS National Championship Game is an annual competition contested between the top two teams from the final rankings of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's FCS championship poll and one other from within Football Championship Subdivision at large. The first round is hosted at an established site determined by conference automatic bids; its winner earns automatic entry into round two.
Prior to this change, top two seeds would compete in the FCS Championship Game at home in their respective cities each year, with its location changing every year - for example 2022's title match up taking place in Stateboro Georgia while Pocatello Idaho saw last season's. It is anticipated that this current format will last at least through 2023 season.
If no top five teams receive automatic bids, remaining spots will be filled at-large by selections from MEAC and SWAC conferences. Teams in these conferences may accept at-large bids as long as their commitment to other postseason games does not interfere with FCS Championship Game participation.
