Tonic Seizure Definition
Tonic seizures are characterized by jerking and stiffening of the muscles. They can last from a few seconds to several minutes and are classified as medical emergencies. The best first aid for tonic seizures includes avoiding injury and administering at-home seizure rescue medication.

Seizures are a result of overactivity in the brain. They are usually caused by a condition called epilepsy. But other causes can include psychological problems, or even repeated chronic illness.

Seizures can last from a few seconds to a few minutes and can be generalized or focal. Prolonged tonic seizures may be mistaken for convulsive syncope.

During tonic seizures, the person's eyesight may go dim, and the person may be unable to recognize objects. He or she may also have a hard time waking up.
