Volvo drivers are enthralled by the remote control features of their key fob. They can lock and unlock their car as well as start the motor and even locate it with the smartphone app.

Beginning the Engine

However, like any battery-operated electronic device, a key fob can be depleted of its charge or cease working after a certain period of time. If you've noticed that your key fob has become less responsive to pressing the lock or unlock buttons, that's a good sign that it's in need of a new battery.

If your vehicle comes with an installed dealer-installed Engine Remote Start accessory, you can also make use of the key fob in order to activate this feature. The car will be heated or cooled at the same temperature it was set to while it was parked. It will run for up 15 minutes.

Using a fingernail, carefully remove the cover from the back of the key fob. Under the cover and on a diagonal at the edge of body, you should find the button. Slide it down and to the right. The cover will come loose and slide off, revealing the manual key blade within! If you still can't locate the button, search around the newly exposed manual key access to determine if there is a hidden slot or lever.

Closing the Windows

One of the hidden features that is not visible on Volvo key fobs is the ability to lower all windows at once using them. This is very useful when you're trying to squeeze into tight parking spaces or just want to breathe fresh air while driving.

To do this simply press and hold the unlock button on your Volvo remote for four seconds. This will lower all the windows, as well as the sunroof if your vehicle has one. When you're done driving, you can close everything by pressing the lock button again for four seconds.

You can also use your key fob to activate your car's panic alarm. It will create an alarm that is loud enough to draw attention and deter thieves. It will also assist you return home safely if you've been out all night. This feature is handy for those who reside in an area that is dangerous or wish to keep your family safe when you are away from home.

Opening the Tailgate

Volvo has packed its key fobs with lot of handy features. They are ideal when you're slammed with groceries or helping kids take their sports gear home after a session.

If you have the Hands-Free Liftgate with Logo Projection and Programmable Height (if equipped), then you can open it by using the key fob. Simply press the button open it, and then press the same button to close it once you're done.

Use the key fob whenever you are ready to start the vehicle. (Don't be concerned if your battery goes out or if your car won't start since it also has an electronic key slot). This is just one of the many helpful tricks for your brand new Volvo.

Turning off the Alarm

Modern key fobs offer a lot of convenience over a conventional mechanical car key. They don't always work perfectly and batteries can fail. If you're in a hurry, or aren't keen on going to a shop to have your key fob programmed, you can attempt to achieve it at home.

Choose a clean, flat surface and lay out your key fob, battery and any other keys. Set the key fob with the Volvo logo facing up and then locate a tiny black button to the bottom left of the fob. Slide it to the right. The cover should loosen and fall off leaving the key's mechanical blade beneath it.

You can open all doors as well as the reargate by pressing the unlock button on the fob's key twice. By pressing the lock button for 2 seconds, you can close the windows and shut the sunroof if they are equipped. Reconnect the battery, and the alarm should cease.
