"Do you think Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream has come true?" Every single time I am asked that I answer no. Why do I answer like that, you ask? Because I don't think MLK Jr.'s dream has come true, at least not now. The media and news have made several examples of racism recently, and today it is stronger than ever, espically in the south.
There is a 53 year old man in North Carolina who killed himself because the main character in the new Star Wars movie is played by a black person. A news article, "Racist Republicans Crusade To Keep Dr. Martin Luther King’s Dream Unfulfilled." Another article, "Racism in Maine schools or just ‘kids being kids’?" These are all examples of how, even 47 years after Martin Luther King Jr.'s death, we stil haven't made much progress.
That was just news examples of racism, but let's move on to media examples. The Oscars have had no people of color nominated for two years in a row, and people have started using the hashtag "#OscarsSoWhite" when making social media posts about it. Confederate flags are more popular now than ever before, even being used to decorate toilet paper and phone cases. Newscasters are constantly making comments when speaking about or to people of color, and at the most recent Democratic debate, systemic racism was a major topic discussed.
