Compressors are essential tools in audio mixing. They help control the dynamic range of audio signals, making loud parts quieter and quiet parts louder. Here's a brief overview of standard compressor usage:

Threshold: Set the level at which compression starts. Any signal above this threshold will be affected by the compressor.
Ratio: Determine how much the compressor reduces the level above the threshold. A 4:1 ratio, for example, means that for every 4 dB above the threshold, the output will only increase by 1 dB.
Attack: Adjust how quickly the compressor responds to signals above the threshold. A fast attack time can emphasize transients, while a slower attack can smooth out peaks.
Release: Control how long it takes for the compressor to stop compressing after the signal falls below the threshold.
Make-up Gain: Compensate for the gain reduction caused by compression to maintain a consistent overall level.
Advanced Compression Techniques:

Sidechain Compression: This technique allows you to trigger compression on one track based on the input from another track. For example, using a kick drum to sidechain compress a bass track creates a pumping effect, where the bass ducks in volume whenever the kick hits.
Parallel Compression (New York Compression): Also known as "parallel compression," this involves blending the dry, uncompressed signal with a heavily compressed version. It adds sustain and thickness while preserving the dynamics of the original track.
Multiband Compression: Divide the audio spectrum into different frequency bands and apply compression independently to each band. This allows for precise control over different frequency ranges, especially in mastering.
