Mesothelioma Asbestosis
Mesothelioma as well as asbestosis are caused by exposure to asbestos. Both are long-term health issues. Mesothelioma can be a cancer, whereas asbestosis is a non-cancerous scarring of lung tissue.
A biopsy is the main way to diagnose pleural mesothelioma. Doctors look at a small amount of pleural tissue using the microscope.
Signs and symptoms
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the thin layer of tissue surrounding organs. Exposure to asbestos may cause it. Asbestos is composed of mineral fibers, which naturally occur. It was once used to make many products, including brakes, insulation and flooring. When asbestos is disturbed it releases tiny fibers into air. Inhaling these fibers can cause irritation in the stomach and lungs. Mesothelioma occurs when cells in the affected tissue begin to develop abnormally and transform into tumors. Mesothelioma can develop in any part of the body and affects men and women equally.
The symptoms of mesothelioma vary depending on the stage and location of the cancer. The most frequent symptoms are breathing difficulties and chest pain. Other symptoms include abdominal pain, fatigue and fever. After exposure to asbestos mesothelioma can take up to 60 years to appear. Symptoms often are not evident until the disease is at an advanced stage. This long latency period is one of the main reasons patients are misdiagnosed.
The first signs of pleural mesothelioma are a cough, breathing problems and chest pain. As the cancer progresses, it can cause fluid accumulation that causes irritation to the lungs, leading to coughing, chest pain, fatigue and weight loss. Fluid buildup can also happen in the abdomen (abdominal mesothelioma) or around the heart (pericardial mesothelioma).
As the disease progresses, the symptoms become more severe and are spread to other parts of the body. mesothelioma and asbestosis may cause pain in the abdomen and cause digestive problems. The mesothelioma in the pleural region can be spread to the chest wall, diaphragm or the heart, causing lung problems.
Doctors can detect mesothelioma by taking a sample of tissue, known as a biopsy. They will analyze the cells to determine if they are epithelioid mesothelioma, sarcomatoid mesothelioma or biphasic. Epithelioid mesothelioma is responsible for 70% of diagnoses and is the most susceptible to treatment. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma has a lower prognosis, and is harder to treat. Biphasic mesothelioma is composed of epithelioi and sarcomatoid cells. It is found in 40 percent of patients. The initial stages of the disease should be treated with surgery.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of mesothelioma is determined by a combination of tests, such as blood tests and imaging scans. The results of tests can be used to determine if there are any mesothelioma cells present and assist doctors in deciding on the most appropriate treatment option for each patient.
The first step in diagnosing mesothelioma is for the doctor to give the patient an examination of their body and inquire about their previous exposure to asbestos. Those who have been exposed to asbestos likely know that they are at risk of developing lung problems, but often it takes years before symptoms start to manifest. Many patients with mesothelioma have been wrongly diagnosed with lung cancer or pneumonia.
The asbestos fibres inhaled cause damage to the lungs and organs. This damage is slow to show up with the first signs of mesothelioma usually not occurring until 20-60 years after exposure.
Asbestos is a group of minerals that are made of microscopic fibres. They were once commonly used in the construction of buildings however, they are now banned from use. Anyone who has worked in mining and manufacturing where asbestos could have been breathed in or handled in any way, are at the greatest chance of developing mesothelioma. This includes miners, insulation workers, builders and electricians.
Following the initial examination is completed, the doctor will require a series of imaging tests to obtain more information about the extent of mesothelioma. These include CT (computerised tomography) scans, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans, and PET scans. These scans can reveal the location of a mesothelioma tumour and indicate if it has spread.
The doctors may also take tissue samples from the affected region to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. This can be done by inserting a needle or during surgery. VATS (video assisted thoracoscopic surgical) or CT-guided core biopsies are commonly utilized for mesothelioma of the pleural. For mesothelioma of the peritoneal region, the sample is normally taken from the abdomen during surgery, or using a cytology needle. The sample is then examined under microscopes to confirm the diagnosis of mesothelioma.
Treatment
The early detection of mesothelioma may provide a treatment that is effective. Treatment options include chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy. Certain patients have also experienced positive results with the new targeted therapies, however they are still being evaluated in clinical trials.
Doctors typically conduct an examination of the body when they suspect mesothelioma. They may also order imaging scans, blood test and a biopsy. A biopsy is the process of removing tissue or fluid from the affected area, such as lung mass, for examination under microscope. Doctors can conduct the procedure using surgical techniques like VATS or by inserting a needle into the mesothelioma to remove a small amount of tissue.
In a biopsy, doctors will also take an in-tissue sample to be tested further from the area surrounding the tumor. This will allow them to determine if the mesothelioma tumor cells are cancerous and which type they are. This information will be used to determine the most effective treatment for mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma symptoms are usually severe and can cause a lot of difficulty. The tumors can cause pain, particularly when they are pressed against organs or nerves. Additionally, mesothelioma typically causes a buildup of fluid in the chest or abdomen. This can cause difficulty breathing, weight loss and a swollen abdomen or chest.
For people who are too sick to undergo surgery doctors can take out excess fluid to help improve breathing and relieve chest pain. This is called thoracentesis or paracentesis. It is also possible to use pleurectomy or decortication. This involves injecting a sterile powder into the pleural cavities to cause inflammation and decrease the accumulation of fluid.
For peritoneal mesothelioma, doctors can remove the tumor and a portion of the abdomen's lining through a procedure referred to as a peritonectomy. Doctors can treat peritoneal cancer using chemotherapy or radiation therapy alone or in conjunction with surgery. They can even administer chemotherapy prior to radiation or surgery and this is referred to as Neoadjuvant therapy. They can also try experimental treatments in clinical trials such as a novel drug that targets the cell cycle.
Prognosis
The prognosis for mesothelioma asbestosis can vary depending on a variety of factors. The type of cancer and its location, as well as the stage all affect how the disease develops and what treatments are used.
A biopsy will determine the type of mesothelioma that a person is suffering from. During the procedure, a tiny portion of tissue is removed from the affected area and examined using a microscope. A pathologist will examine the tissue for signs of mesothelioma, as well as for any other abnormalities.
Some signs that may indicate mesothelioma of the pleura include chest pain, breathing difficulties and chronic coughing. Patients who experience these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.
It is often difficult to identify mesothelioma, particularly in its earliest stages. Due to this, it is common for people to get mistakenly diagnosed. Getting a second opinion from a mesothelioma specialist can help improve a patient's prognosis. A positive diagnosis can boost the chance of survival.
A cytology test is a crucial component of diagnosing mesothelioma. In this test it is a fluid sample from the affected lungs or abdomen is taken and analyzed under a microscope to detect symptoms of mesothelioma. The test can also reveal how the cells are growing which aids doctors in determining the type of mesothelioma a person has.
Another lab test that is used to diagnose mesothelioma is immunohistochemistry. In this lab test, antibodies are used to bind to markers on cells. When the antibody binds to the marker, the stain changes color. The color is a sign of the type of mesothelioma the cells are showing.
The oncologist will determine the extent of the mesothelioma's spread after it has been identified. This is known as the mesothelioma staging. Stage 1 mesothelioma has the best chance of survival, and is followed by stage 2 and stage 3. The prognosis for people suffering from peritoneal or sarcomatoid mesothelioma is worse due to the fact that these cancer cells are more difficult to treat than epithelioid.
If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, doctors may suggest chemotherapy, surgery or radiation therapy. Some doctors may prescribe a combination therapy. A mesothelioma vaccination is another option for treatment. It has proven to be effective in improving survival rates and slowing the development of mesothelioma.
