This excerpt describes pride as a seed that can go two separate paths, life and death. It can help you build up yourself, yet also shatter you and the people around you. This could also be an allusion/metaphor to the Garden of Eden, and referring to the forbidden fruit that Eve picked. In the rest of the garden, other fruits and pleasures are found yet, the forbidden fruit is so appealing and desirable. She eats it and is “blessed” with knowledge, finding shame when she is naked. It gives her a short blessing, but it very very quickly changes to a curse. When she picks out the fruit, she ruins all chances of remaining in Heaven, and Adam and her are sent back down to Earth, almost hellish compared to Heaven. Eve can be a parallel character to the narrator, who utilizes his pride in order to force Doodle into walking and mobilizing himself. Although it is a positive that Doodle is no longer immobile, that sense of happiness is short-lived, as the ability to walk along his brother was the very thing that brought him death. The pride of his brother, although helped him short term, caused his death in the end. Pride can grant either a blessing or a curse.
