The history behind the card

Renault's hands free card is an international hit. It has become an integral part of the daily life of car owners. It was first designed twenty years ago and is now one of the most innovative innovations within the company. In 2001, the Laguna II, a saloon aimed at embodying 'lifestyle' driving, came into production. It was an era of great innovation with numerous new technology options that allowed customers to enjoy their vehicle to the fullest.

However, the people who occupied these cars still had to utilize keys to open and close their doors. This was a real issue for a lot of people and Renault engineers determined to tackle it.

They decided to incorporate a contactless card in their vehicles, and develop the system that would allow drivers to open and start their cars simply by using their hands. The result is the card key, which is now on two in three Renault vehicles. It's either located in the ignition barrel, or the centre console the car will be unlocked when the card approaches and secure itself automatically when removed. This is a genuine Renault remote control card (without blade). The design

The keyless entry system

The hands-free card from Renault was a groundbreaking piece of technology when it was introduced 20 years ago. The exterior is the same however the technology has been improved to make it easier to use and less vulnerable to hacking.

It's not possible to use it from outside to unlock doors or start the car unless the driver activates it. The reason is that the radio signal antennas "around" the car are set up to determine the presence of the key outside or inside it. The key will still start the ignition from a distance however, it won't unlock the doors. This is to protect you.

The second is that the wireless remote control transmissions of the system use the rolling-code. This reduces the likelihood of someone intercepting a control message and retransmitting it to gain access, but does not remove it. [1]

If the key fob on your Megane suddenly ceases to work, particularly after dropping it to the floor it could be a sign that the receiver module has failed.
