My home town is Kolkata. Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal. It is situated on the banks of the Hooghly River. It is the second largest city in India after Mumbai.It is the first city in India to have an underground metro railway system. It also has an international airport called Netaji Shubhash Chandra Bose International Airport.
It is known as the "City of Joy". The city is known for its rich culture, delicious food, and friendly people. Kolkata is also a very affordable city to live in. The cost of living in Kolkata is very low compared to other Indian cities.
The city's former name, Calcutta, is an adapt version of the Bengali name Kalikata. According to some resources, Kalikata is derived from the Bengali word Kalikshetra, meaning “Ground of Kali'' but the city's name derives from the location of its original settlement on the bank of a canal.
On January 1, 2001, Calcutta was officially renamed to Kolkata and August 24, 1686, has been celebrated as the foundation day of Kolkata before High Court order in 2003.
Its also a belief that the name Kalikata was derived from Goddess Kali. From the work of a Bengali poet, Bipradaas, of 15th century, he mentioned of the city's early name's being Kolikata, from which Kolkata are said to derive. The north Kolkata is the oldest part of the city.
The city here is famous for being the oldest port in India. Kolkata has been called one of the major tourist destinations due to its diverse cultures. A singularly vital centre of history, art, and culture in India, Kolkata is a city everyone needs to experience at some point in their lives.

The fammous food of Kolkata is rice and fish.The popular dresses of Kolkata are jamdani, baluchari, tant, and garad amongst many others are types of traditional clothes of west bengal donned by Bengali women.
The majority of the population of Kolkata speaks Bengali, which is the official language of Kolkata.
The dominant language is Bengali, but Urdu, Odia, Tamil, Punjabi, and other languages also are spoken. Kolkata is a cosmopolitan city, other than Indians, groups present include a variety of peoples from elsewhere in Asia, Europeans, North Americans, and Australia.
