Renault Keys - How They Work
Renaults use a fairly complicated system as far as the immobiliser and keys go. This could make the process of changing keys a lengthy process. It could take a lengthy time to program the car, unless you have access to it and bring it to us.
Keys
The Renault Group is known for its vans, buses and tractors, however they also make cars. It was established in 1899, and is a large and well established company with an extensive range of car models. You'll need a new key in the event that you have lost or damaged your keys to your car. Why not let us make one for you instead of waiting for your local dealer and then waiting for it to arrive? We can replace your smart key or remote with ease by calling KeyNOW.
If you require a Renault Clio V, Captur 2 or New Zoe spare key we can provide you with a mechanical code number to order a new key through the dealer. We can also reset keys such as a Renault Kangoo, Traffic or Master key.
Renault has a long history of innovation. It was the first company to utilize remote central locking in a production vehicle. Paul Lipschultz invented this technology for Niemens which is an automotive supplier of security components. This was a major leap for safety in cars.
Remotes
Hands-free cards from Renault are still widely used in their vehicles despite the fact smartphones are replacing them. In fact, two out of three Renault vehicles have hands-free cards. The use of these cards has increased in recent years. In this video, Pascaline of Renault's products division discusses the primary components of these cards and explains how they function.
Renaults have a complex immobiliser, making it essential to know the basics before you attempt to unlock your car without keys. Some cars have an emergency lock that is located on the handle for the passenger door that can be used in the event a key malfunction or battery running out. This is a good choice for those who don't want to hire a locksmith.
You'll require a tool such as an a-slim jim or pump-up if you wish to remove the key fob. If you don't have these tools, you may require a screwdriver and hammer to remove the cylinder.
You should be able to get into the passenger's compartment and you will see a tiny lock inside the driver's panel, next to the handle. This is a security feature to stop people from locking themselves inside their vehicle or accidentally stealing a neighbour's. It's a simple, but effective security measure that will save you lots of time and hassle when you have to access your vehicle quickly.
Transponders
Transponders are a common feature on modern cars to help protect against car theft. These small devices, which are attached to the key fob have a chip inside and can communicate with the car once it is within range. These chips use a unique code to identify the key, and also tell it which vehicle it is linked with.
The chip sends an electronic signal to a pair of coils that are attached to the ignition barrel of the vehicle. The coils activate when the key is within range and transmit a pulse electromagnetic energy to the transponder chip. The chip responds by sending a unique identifier to the car. The unique code can be used to unlock doors and open the car.
Similar technology was utilized in military planes during the World War 2 era to help air traffic controllers identify them on radar. The aviation industry still utilizes this type of chip code message.
For a long time the systems were thought to be invulnerable to cloning. This was due to the fact that there were only 74 Quadrillion (74,000,000,000,000,000) possible codes for each transponder. But renault clio spare key behind these chips has been upgraded and they are now not completely clone-proof. This has seen many auto locksmiths to improve their skills by learning to read, program and write these latest types.
Immobilisers
Renaults are a bit complicated in the area of immobilisers and key systems. There are two major systems that affect how keys are programmed into the car. The older system uses an "kill switch" to turn off a crucial part of the car's ignition mechanism if the proper key is not present. These are extremely delicate and will need a trained technician to correctly detect and fix the issue should they fail.
The latest system is easier to use. It utilizes advanced cryptography and rolling security codes to avoid copying the code from the ECU or key. This is the code that will be used to replace keys we provide.
Some models will even use a special ring antenna that isn't detected by transponder scanners, and is exclusive to the vehicle. This is extremely effective in preventing hotwiring and is also extremely difficult to bypass with a standard key or a transponder emulator. We have a special product dubbed the Renault Antenna Emulator (RAE) that can be used to circumvent this kind of immobiliser on Renault Clio phase 2 models and some Renault commercial vehicles equipped with ID46 transponders. It works by mimicking the operation of a transponder that is valid in the ring antenna and can be used for failed keys that are lost or stolen without dismantling the ECU. It is Thatcham tested and approved to provide additional security for customers of motor insurance.
