Renault has a long and rich history of innovation. It was the first company that used remote central locking in production vehicles. Paul Lipschultz invented this technology for Niemens, an automotive supplier of security components. This was a major leap for car safety.

Remotes

The hands-free cards offered by Renault are still used extensively in their vehicles despite the fact that smartphones appear to be replacing them. In fact, two out of three Renault vehicles are equipped with hands-free cards. Their use has increased in recent years. In this video Pascaline from the Product Division of Renault explains how these cards work.

Renaults have an immobiliser mechanism that is quite complex. It is crucial to know the basics before attempting to unlock a car without the use of a key. Some cars have an emergency lock that is located on the handle for the passenger door that can be used in the case of an unreliable key or battery runout. This is an option for those who don't wish to hire a professional locksmith.

You'll need a tool such as an ultra-thin jim or pump-up to remove the key fob. If you don't own these tools, you could need to use the screwdriver and hammer to remove the cylinder.

You should be able to go into the passenger's compartment and find a small lock in the driver's side panel next to the handle. This is a safety feature to stop people from locking themselves in their own vehicle or accidentally stealing a neighbour's. It's a simple but effective security measure that could save you a lot of time and effort should you need to get into your vehicle quickly.

Transponders

Transponders are a common feature in modern vehicles to guard against theft of vehicles. These small devices, which are attached to the key fob include a chip and can communicate with the car once it is within of. The chips utilize a unique code to identify the key and inform it which vehicle it's paired with.

The chip emits the signal which is picked up by two coils that are placed around the barrels of ignition inside the vehicle. The coils are activated with the key and transmit a pulse electromagnetic energy to the chip. The chip responds by sending a unique identification to the car. The unique code can then be used to unlock doors and begin the car.

In renault clio key , a similar technology was utilized to help air traffic control to identify military aircrafts on radar. This type of chip messaging is still utilized today in the aviation industry.

These systems were believed to be clone proof, until recently. This was due to the fact that there were only 74 Quadrillion (74,000,000,000,000,000) possible codes for each transponder. The technology behind these chips was enhanced, and they no longer have duplicate-proof. This has led to many auto locksmiths to improve their skills by learning to read, program and write these latest kinds.

Immobilisers

Renaults are a bit complicated when it comes to the immobilisers and key systems. There are two main systems that influence the way a new key is programmed into the car. The older system uses an "kill switch" to turn off a crucial component of the car's start-up mechanism if the correct key is not present. They are extremely delicate and require an experienced technician to diagnose and rectify if they fail.

The newer system is more user-friendly to use. It makes use of advanced cryptography and rolling security codes to avoid copying the code from the ECU or key. This is the code that will be used to replace keys we supply.

Some models will even use an earpiece that can't be recognized by standard transponder scanners. It is also unique to the vehicle. This is extremely effective in blocking hotwiring, and is extremely difficult to bypass by using a standard key or an emulator for transponders. We have a special product dubbed the Renault Antenna Emulator (RAE) that can be used to circumvent this kind of immobiliser in Renault Clio phase 2 models, as well as in some Renault commercial vehicles that are equipped with ID46 transponders. It is a replica of a valid key transponder within the ring antenna. It can be used to replace damaged or lost keys without removing the ECU. It has been tested and approved by Thatcham to give assurance to motor insurance customers.
