Joseph Crowell (an English actor) wrote about the game in New Orleans in 1829. The game involved four players who each bet on the hand with the highest value. An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling describes how the game spread through the Mississippi riverboats. Gambling was common in New Orleans. This allowed it to spread across the Mississippi and West, particularly during the goldrush. It is thought that it was part of the frontier pioneering cultures.
