An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling describes how the game spread through the Mississippi riverboats. Gambling was common in New Orleans. This allowed it to spread across the Mississippi and West, particularly during the goldrush. It is thought that it was part of the frontier pioneering cultures.
