The History of Hayes Place

The history of Hayes Place is a long and complex one. It begins with a new double-storey house constructed by Robert Hall opposite Hayes Church in about 1600 on the site of Asshleys. In the following centuries it would undergo many changes, including being a family home for Sir Stephen Scott.

Hayes Place is a large mansion located at the top of an hill in Redlands. It's a favorite spot for commuters however, it's also a good location to live in.

Mary Folsom Hayes Chynoweth built it as a private residence. She claimed to be an expert faith healer. She and her sons were in a position to afford the sprawling mansion because of their iron-rich mining fortune in Wisconsin.

He was there until the war and after returning to Hayes in 1928, the business was transferred to Ernest Sidney Poynter who lived here with his wife Elizabeth. Peter and Eileen Sheath took over the business, which they operated for a long time before it was sold to Simon and Sarah Butler.

The staircase made of walnut, that has 57 steps, is among the most striking aspects of the house. It was made from black walnut and butternut and is an as high as 45 feet to the fourth floor.

23 Hayes Street

23 Hayes Street, also known as the hayes window and door is among the oldest buildings within the village. It is a two-storey structure that dates back to the 18th century. It was constructed as a baker's shop. It served the village for more than a century. However, it was shut down in 2003 and is now a residence.

Built in 1888, St Mary Cottages is a terrace of 10 cottages designed by George Devey for Sir Everard Hambro. In 1994 the terrace was classified as Grade II.

Cottages have a roof that is steeply pitched made of tiles, with queen struts that rake. Straight wind bracings are set on Jowel poles. They are weatherboarded and feature an open-air window with a square head to each bay with small panes.

The building contains cottages as well as a huge garden and basement. The ground floor of the property is used as a meeting room and the first floor is currently being used by Mr. and Mrs. Clarke who bought the property in 2004 and have transformed it to a modern standard.

Another interesting aspect of this historical building is the chimneys' original design. These are especially impressive. The roof is also covered with a thick layer of lead.

It is believed that the house was initially one cottage. It is possible that the addition of a second cottage to the original structure, however it is not clear whether this was related.
