Structural engineers design the 'bones and muscles' that create the form and shape of buildings, bridges, stadiums, off-shore and other civil structures, ensuring they are strong, safe and secure. This is a broad and challenging discipline which requires knowledge of the behaviour of materials (concrete, rock, metals, plastics and composites), fluid mechanics as they relate to structural loads, dynamics in relation to structural response and mathematics for the development of theoretical and numerical models. It is also necessary to be aware of the environmental impact and sustainable development issues relating to the built environment.
This area of engineering is renowned for its research and students benefit from a vibrant research community. CEE has a long tradition of excellence in this field and has produced some of the world’s most renowned structural engineers. This reputation has been strengthened by our commitment to teaching at all levels.
The BSc Structural Engineer ing program is a broad and challenging degree, which prepares graduates to be successful in many areas of the field. The degree provides a solid foundation for students who wish to go on to postgraduate study in structural engineering, as well as a range of other subjects such as civil, mechanical or geotechnical engineering.
Graduates of this programme can find work in a wide variety of sectors, including construction, consultancy firms, research centres and government agencies. Many of our graduates go on to further study at the Masters level, specialising in such areas as bridge engineering, earthquake engineering, structural mechanics or long-span structures.
The MSc Structures and Mechanics is a practice-oriented degree with the option of undertaking advanced cutting-edge research. It is suitable for both practicing structural engineers and those with a general engineering background who are interested in the application of fundamental principles to real-world problems.
In the past our graduates have gone on to pursue careers in consulting engineering (designing building structures and bridges) and contracting engineering (concerned with the process and erection of the structure rather than the design). They may also choose to specialise at the doctoral level, perhaps working on a particular aspect of structural engineering such as seismic analysis or the behaviour of long-span structures.
To qualify for a place on this programme, you must have a GPA of at least 3.2 from your previous degree. You must also have completed the following core and non-core courses:
