Lexus Key Replacement - Replacing a Remote Or Fob
No matter if you have a standard Lexus key that turns on the ignition, or a smart key for your car, which starts by pressing an arrow, eventually the battery inside your key will go out. The replacement process is simple with a paperclip. Simply pop the existing battery out and insert the new one (refer to your owner's manual to determine which kind of battery you need) and then secure it back into the correct position.
Keys
Lexus keys aren't simple to replace and require a professional car key replacement locksmith to make a functioning spare. Every Lexus key is equipped with a microchip which must be programmed to connect with the immobiliser system of your vehicle.
It requires a lot of time and special equipment for this process to be done correctly. Each model comes with its own set of programming procedures. Replacing a lost or damaged key or fob is a costly job and should be left to professionals unless you have the right tools and know-how.
If you have a traditional key that rotates in the ignition barrel, or a smart key that can start the car at the touch of an arrow they will both eventually need their batteries replaced. You can save money by doing this yourself, but you'll need the use of a small Phillips screwdriver as well as the coin (a 20p piece works well) and a paperclip. You will find two or three screws on the back of the key fob. Remove them and then store them in a safe place (they are small and easy to lose). The fob can be removed to reveal an indentation that is circular for the metal key, pop the battery out (using the paperclip) and then insert the new one making sure it's the correct way up. Clip the inside of the metal key back together.
Remotes
Replacing a Lexus remote or fob can be a complicated process and requires skilled locksmiths with the right tools and expertise. Certain models require the transponder on the key to be reprogrammed to work with the immobiliser system of the car. The chips are programmed with different methods, based on the model of Lexus. This is done by using a special device that sends a code chip to unlock the doors or to start the engine.
Certain Lexus cars are equipped with a single unit that incorporates the key head and the remote. They are much easier to replace because there is no separate chip. This kind of key is also cheaper.
All fobs eventually lose their battery power, regardless of the type of key. It can be quite frustrating, but with a little know-how you can get your Lexus up and running. Refer to the owner's manual to determine which type of battery you need. Find an alternative. Then, find lexus car key replacement opening inside of the fob and insert a coin (a 20p piece is ideal) and twist. You should see an area flat that you can remove with an ordinary paperclip.
Then, pull the old battery off and insert the new one. Be sure the replacement battery is installed with the correct the polarity. Clip the inside of your fob to insert the key in the metal.
Transponder Chips
The majority of new cars manufactured after 1995 have transponder chips in the key head to disarm the immobiliser system. If you've got keys with a chip inside, the head has a plastic cover which can be pulled off to reveal an L-shaped key. Making a replacement key, or fob made of a transponder chip is a multi-stage procedure that involves precise cutting of replacement keys and programming of the transponder chip in order to synch up with the vehicle's immobiliser.
Transponders are electronic device with Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) that contains a set of windings (very fine wire wrapped around the tube) that resemble ones in an electric motor. The windings generate a coded message that the car is able to read. If the code is correct the car will begin to move.
There are two types of transponder chip, the one is known as the 80-bit and the other is called the circle + (General Motors). The first one is reusable, but must be unlocked with a special machine in order to work on another compatible vehicle. The second type is more difficult to use since the older ones could be broken, drilled, or toss out when keycases are changed. They can be salvaged, however, to use with an ad-hoc key that doesn't require batteries to operate.
Immobiliser Systems
Immobiliser systems are electronic security devices that deter thieves from starting your car. It works by sending an electronic signal from your car to your key each time you attempt to start it. The electronic chip in your key then responds with an individual code that must match that in the vehicle in order to start. If the codes don't coincide, your engine will stop immediately to stop theft.
Modern smart keys and fobs feature embedded transponder chips that stores electronic security in a format that cannot be duplicated. When your fob or key is inserted into the ignition, it transmits the code to a receiver within the ECU. The ECU is then able to compare it with the code in its memory. It then activates the fuel system and ignition circuit if they match. If the codes do not match, your engine will not start, even if an armed robber attempts to short-circuit the ignition circuit.
The procedure of replacing a key or fob involves a multi-stage procedure that includes cutting the new blade accurately and programming it to ensure that it can be synced with your car's systems. There are a variety of immobilisers used in different models and years and each one requires its own unique programming procedure. We utilize Ross-Tech to ensure that the replacement key is correctly programmed. This will provide you with the highest level of performance and security.
