The 10 Most Terrifying Things About Headphones Noise Cancelling
Which Over the Ear Headphones Are the Best?

The noise-cancelling headphones can be an ideal solution for anyone who enjoys listening, whether you're in the office or commuting on the train. Which are the best, though?

Sony's flagship headphones are an excellent value. They come with a fresh design and a superior audio quality and also enticing features. These headphones are able to capture every detail, from Sinead O'Connor's trembling Bridge to the powerful chorus.

1. Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony is the master of noise cancellation and its WH1000XM5 headphones represent the best version of this model. A few well-thought-out enhancements over the XM4s make these headphones an all-round excellent pair of cans, especially for commuters and travelers. They're comfortable, feature multipoint technology to connect two devices at once and feature the most advanced ANC Sony has produced yet. They are lightweight and can play for up to 27 hours without charging. This is enough time for a week of daily commutes or an extended flight.

The WH1000XM5s are sleek and minimal in appearance. They are made of ABS, a recyclable and recycled plastic. The branding is minimal, although you'll see the tiny "Sony" logo on each hinge of each earcup. The headband and earcups feature a soft, plush material that is comfortable for all heads with the exception of the largest. The earcups can be adjusted to ensure that you get the perfect fit for you.

Unlike previous models, which focused on reducing low frequency noise, the XM5s amplify the sound waves at higher frequency to cancel out background noise. Best over ear headphones noise cancelling improves overall sound quality, and helps to reduce cabin and engine noise on flights. The XM5s is equipped with an additional processing unit that helps enhance noise cancellation on planes. The audio app is also able to automatically alter the listening environment based on the data on air pressure.

The WH-1000XM5s also has an integrated voice assistant that is simple to use and works with Alexa as well as Google Assistant, Siri, and many more. The XM5s can be connected with other Sony audio devices for stereo separation and multi-room music. They can support Bluetooth high-bitrate streaming audio via Sony's LDAC but not HD or aptX.

2. Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless

If a company has been manufacturing headphones for as long as Sennheiser you can expect top-of-the-line audio quality and a comfortable fit. With their latest over-ears dubbed Momentum 4 Wireless, they provide both. They've redesigned their design to eliminate some characteristic elements that gave their original models the look of an aviator. They also upgraded active noise cancellation using their latest Adaptive Noisy Cancellation Technology. They've evaluated these headphones to last 60 hours of listening time with ANC enabled, which doubles the battery life of many rivals.

The new model is more compact, since it folds up and is a bit smaller. The earpads and headband are made of artificial PU leather, which is comfortable on my head even when I wear it all day. They're also not too tight, which means you can wear them on long flights, or even during your workouts.

The sound is smooth and clear, however there are some highs that can add a bit of muddiness to mixes. The bass is overemphasized, adding extra impact and thump to genres like EDM or hip hop. It's not a big deal however it could be a problem for some listeners. The high-mid also has a sloppy balance, bringing vocals and instruments forward in the mix but at the expense of bringing out some vocals.

The Sennheiser momentum 4 wireless comes with all of the usual features, including Bluetooth wireless connectivity, a translucent mode that blends outside sounds into your music for improved awareness, as well as mobile application support for pre-set and custom EQ options. They can also be used with a 3.5mm cable if you're connecting to your phone via wire. They can connect to your device via SBC, AAC HD, and aptX Adaptive codes, and they can cut down the latency by as much as one quarter second.

3. B&W PX7 S2

Since their introduction in the year 2000, the original PX7s have been featured on numerous lists of the top Bluetooth headphones, topping them in a lot of cases due to their impressive ANC and excellent sound quality. But, like all wireless headphones, the PX7s have been getting older and required a refresh, hence the PX7 S2. B&W didn't just change the design and design, but also made enhancements to ANC and added features for voice calling.

The PX7 S2 headphones are extremely light, making them ideal for long listening sessions. The design of the PX7 S2 is basically similar to the model before it. It has the sleek oval aluminum top-plate that is used for the earcups, the hook-like accent that slides instead of clicks when you expand the headband and the physical buttons. The earcups are smaller, however, and the headband is a bit less large overall.

B&W's software allows you to modify EQ settings for bass and treble, however, you don't have as much control over the mix of these two elements as you do with higher-end headphones. A Quick Action button on the left earcup switches between modes for the environment and can be configured in the Bowers & Wilkins Music app to call your device's voice assistant.

The PX7 S2 sounds great for most musical styles, with soundstages that have plenty of width and good separation between the various elements of sound. It shines in particular on works featuring acoustic instruments like Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata in G Minor Op. 19, by pianist Yuja Wang and cellist Gautier Capucon, with acoustic instrumental tones that give an airy feel. It's also able to handle heavier songs as well, thanks to the bass power and mid-range clarity on Entombed's garage/death-n'roll crossover curiosity To Ride the Straight, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth giving an overwhelming soundscape while allowing to hear vocal details such as Lars-Goran Petrov's gritty growl.

4. Bose QuietComfort 35

Bose is one of the first companies to introduce active noise cancelling headphones to the mainstream. Though they had a stranglehold on the market for many years, they are now competing against newer headphones that offer more features and superior sound quality. QuietComfort 35 remains a great option for anyone who wants to listen to podcasts or music without noise or rumbles.

The default sound profile is balanced, and they're comfortable to wear. The ANC does an excellent job of removing background noise, but it tends to emphasize low frequencies more than the latest headphones such as the Sony WH-1000XM5.

If you're looking for a pair that can be used to listen to audiobooks or podcasts, the QC35s have an impressive noise cancellation mode that cuts down on ambient noises while keeping you isolated from the hum of the surrounding environment. The QC35s also let you connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time and "audio-share" so you can listen to something with one pair of headphones and answer an incoming phone call on the other.

The Bose Connect app is decent but doesn't provide the full EQ options of some other headphone apps. The QC35s can also be used in wired mode using a cable, but the sound quality takes a major drop and they don't offer the same level of battery longevity as wireless models.

The QC35s are an Bose product, and it might not be for all. Other manufacturers offer sleeker designs. You can add some personalization to your headphones by purchasing a decal-covered cover from companies like SlickWraps or Skin Sticker. You can also alter the color of the ear cups and headband later in the year, much like you can with the older QC25 model.

5. Sony WH-1000XM3

Sony's WH1000XM3 headphones are the best wireless headphone that has active noise cancellation you can purchase right now. They're more expensive than Anker Soundcore Q20 Wireless but they isolate more background noise. The app is also more advanced and comes with a variety of sound-related options for customization.

The XM3s offer a fantastic audio quality, and since their release they've been improved to give even better performance. They provide a bit more detail across the frequency spectrum, their noise cancelling works better at all volumes and they've improved controls for things like Quick Attention mode, voice control and Speak-to-Chat. The new feature, Adaptive sound control, automatically adjusts the amount of external sound that is allowed in, based on the location of your body and the activities you're doing.

There are some issues, however. The midrange can sound a bit recessed and the treble can sometimes be too loud. They have a tendency to increase bass too much in some tracks, making them sound overly full and heavy. But that's something you can correct by changing the settings for your headphone or via EQ adjustments in the Sony app.

The XM3s are a great pair headphones, especially for commuters or frequent travelers. They are more comfortable, feel and look premium, and last longer over the JBL Live 650 BTNC wireless. They also have a better battery and one of the most effective noise cancelling features available. They're also more versatile and more suitable for use on mobile devices than the Audio-Technica's ATH-M50X Wireless, even though they have less impressive noise cancellation. They're also not waterproof, which could be a problem for some.
