The Reasons You're Not Successing At Noise Cancelling Over Ear Headphones
The Best Noise Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones

When you're trying to block out the engine noise of jet engines or just want to block out the hum of your HVAC system at home, you'll require the most effective noise-cancelling over-ear headphones. The new Sony WH1000XM5s are the top of the line in active sound cancellation. The predecessors were excellent.

We've taken into account adjustable ANC, touch controls and on-ear detection (for pausing music when you take off your headphones). Our top picks feature high-quality audio as well as comfortable, spacious earphones.

1. Sony WH-1000XM5

The fifth generation of Sony flagship headphones is a significant upgrade over the previous generation, featuring enhanced noise cancellation and superior audio quality. Its remarkable ANC creates a virtual cone over your head, blocking out a surprising amount low-frequency sound. The ear cups also block mid- to treble range sounds like chatter from passengers or the creaking of metal, as well as clanging dishesware.

The WH-1000XM5s' sound is very natural, unlike some noise cancelling headphones that sound hollow. They're able to reproduce the rising and falling of the drums of Billie Eilish with incredible depth and clarity, while also keeping edges clean and crystal clear. It's a pleasure to listen to them during an extended flight or on a commute.

A capacitive touch-screen on the right earcup controls the most commonly used controls, including play/pause volume up/down, and skip forwards/backwards. It can also end and answer calls and switch between ANC mode and ambient sound. Alternately, hold and press the power button for several seconds to hear a prompt of remaining battery life.

Another significant improvement to the XM5s is the new QN1 microphone, which is designed to record high-quality audio while recording podcasts and videos. The microphone is more sensitive than the previous models and has a larger audio range that makes it easier to pick up your voice.

The XM5 has also carried over certain features that were XM4's like the adaptive ANC system which automatically optimizes performance in accordance with your surroundings. Its 'Wearing Detection is now able to detect when you take off the headset and pauses video or music, and restarts it when you put them back on. It's also compatible with Sony's DSEE Extreme engine, which claims to upscale the quality of compressed music to a near-hi-res resolution.

2. Sony WH-1000XM4

The WH1000XM4s from Sony are the most recent version of their top-of-the-line over-ear headphones. They offer class-leading performance, even though they don't come with the same active noise cancellation as the WH1000XM5s. The WH-1000XM4s boast a stronger Bluetooth connection as well as an improved noise cancellation algorithm. They also feature an audio chip that enhances music to HD quality, as well as advanced voice controls.

The biggest improvement in this latest generation is that Sony has made the WH-1000XM4s more comfortable than before by putting padding around the headband, and moving the microphones towards the outer edges of the ear. This makes them more comfortable for long listening sessions.

You can also select between five different sound settings based on the environment. Sony headphones have an app that allows you to modify your EQ settings. The app lets you monitor your activity and automatically optimize the settings. They are an excellent choice for those who travel.

The WH-1000XM4 has also improved its noise cancellation. It's now more effective due to the greater sensitivity and improved filtering of low frequencies. You can test this by looking at a graph like the one below, where higher peaks indicate more sounds are being cancelled out. The WH1000XM4s also do better at reducing low-frequency noises like the hum of an air conditioning unit, or the constant rumble of a plane engine.

The WH-1000XM4s are still equipped with a a great set of features such as a battery that lasts up to 30 hours and a USB-C charging port built-in. They also have Quick Alert, a feature that lets you press the right earcup and then dampen music to activate transparency mode. Speak to Chat, for instance it pauses the media when you speak (and it works, although sometimes it fails to recognize taps) and Sony's Smart Listening Technology, which can detect your surroundings and provide better sound.

3. Bose QuietComfort 35 Series II

The Bose QuietComfort 35 Series II (or QC35 Wireless 2018) are over-ear headphones that were launched in September 2017. They were replaced with the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 701 that will be available in 2021. However they remain popular and affordable.

The QC35 II are a great pair of wireless headphones that provide an incredibly comfortable fit and a neutral sound profile and excellent noise isolation. They can be used in noisy settings as well as while on the move and last for more than a day on one charge. They are also compatible with the majority of smart assistants and are activated by the use of a specific button. You can ask the assistant to play music, answer trivia questions or read your smartphone notifications.

The padding around the ears is a good size and can accommodate a variety of ears. They are also light. The housings' hinges can be folded down to allow them to be easily packed in a bag or a backpack. The controls are on the right-hand side and are easy to use. Playback can be controlled with tapping the buttons, including rewinding or skipping songs.

To show the quality you can expect from these Bose headphones We played The Beatles' Let It Be and listened to drum beats and piano parts. The QC35 II deliver crisp, clear audio that's full-bodied and detailed. They can detect subtleties such as Paul McCartney’s unsteady timing as he builds to the chorus or Gerard Way's snarl as his lyrics praising teenage-personalism in Teenagers.

The QC35 II can be connected to up to two devices at once and is compatible with the majority of smart assistants. The QC35 II comes with a carry bag and USB charging cable.

4. Sony WH-CH720N

Sony is known for making great headphones for a low cost. The budget-friendly WH-CH720N headphones from Sony are not an exception. They have many of the same features as the flagship WH1000XM5 headphones, but in a more budget friendly design. They also offer a decent amount of active noise cancelling at a low price.

Similar to the WH-1000XM5 headphones these headphones have 30mm dynamic drivers which provide plenty of bass and clear high frequencies. They have an unbalanced sound that works well with a variety of genres of music. They also feature a huge, encompassing soundstage.

The WH-CH720N headphones feature buttons instead of the gestures or touch controls employed by the XM5 headphones. This could be a bit of an issue as the buttons can be confusing at first. Luckily, the headphones have clear labels and the controls are arranged in a smart way. Double press of the '+' button can pause and play audio. A single press lowers the volume. When you press and hold the button, voice assistants are launched and calls are turned down.

With ANC turned on, these headphones can last for around 35 hours before they run out of power. This is one of the most efficient battery performance we've seen in over-ear headphones. They also have a standby mode to aid in conserving battery.

Bluetooth allows users to connect the WH-CH720N headphones to Android and iOS devices. They support LDAC which lets them play high-resolution audio on compatible devices. They're also compatible with PlayStation consoles that have an analog 1/8" TRS cable and can be used as wired headphones on a PC with the included USB dongle. The Sony Headphones Connect app lets you customize your headphones with an EQ slider and presets, multipoint connectivity, as well as secure listening.

5. B&W PX7 S2

The PX7 S2 is a follow-up to a successful predecessor, but it's not an unfinished upgrade. With a more modern design and a new application, they deliver on the promise of premium build quality and sound that is designed to faithfully express artistic intention. They are also extremely comfortable to wear throughout the day.

While they're not as effective as the noise cancellation of the Bose QuietComfort 35 Series II or the Sony WH-1000XM5 but they do a excellent job of blocking out ambient noises and ensuring that you're able to focus on your music, podcasts or gaming handheld without interruptions. They use a six-strong microphone setup (four to cancel noise and two for voice pickup) and a revised algorithm that reduces ambient sound by 30 decibels. They're also one of the few Bluetooth headphones we've tested that can be used in a passive mode, which allows you to listen to your content on your own without putting power to the drive units.

They also work with the B&W Music app, a free download that offers many features that complement the superior noise cancelling. This includes the Quick Action button that cycles through three different modes of environmental, displays battery life and can be set to launch your device's voice assistant. Annoyingly, you have to press and hold the button - one press would be easier and more intuitive.

The PX7 S2 are an impressive pair of headphones which will delight all music fans. The PX7 S2 are not suitable for demanding music genres such as metal and rock that favor bass-heavy productions and muddy low frequency as they are to folk, classical, and Acoustic. But, they will still impress those who appreciate audiophile credentials, and are practical and easy to use.
