Sony Headphones Review - The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones
The fifth-generation Sony noise cancelling headphones are a bit different from the previous model, however they're just as good. They're lightweight, comfortable and feature a variety of features, including Speak-to-Chat, Quick Attention mode wear detection, and AI-powered DSEE Extreme audio upscaling.
The ANC is very powerful and reduces train noise to a quiet rumble. The option to pass through allows you to hear outside sounds if needed.
1. Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony headphones are among the top when it comes noise cancellation. The fifth generation of WH-1000XM5s are no exception, offering one of the most enjoyable experiences we've had with noise cancelling headphones in recent years. When you put on the headphones and turn on noise cancellation, you're entering a world of silence. Engine sounds as well as HVAC systems, creaking metal, and even conversations with your neighbors are all muted.
The XM5s also impress on the audio aspect. Their large soundstage lets every element of a song to shine and breathe. On Billie Eilish's Bad Guy for example, the drums pound with a satisfying amount of force and power while the soaring vocals blend throughout the mix.
Other features that make the XM5s stand out include their smart interactions with your smartphone. They can detect the moment they're taken off your head and pause music, they can detect that you're traveling on a busy road and automatically reduce the noise cancelling volume, and they can connect with two devices simultaneously and switch between them, depending on what you need more urgently.
The WH-1000XM5s also are environmentally friendly. They are made of recycled plastic and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) with the headband being made of high-end fabric. They come with a case that folds into itself, creating an incredibly compact pouch. Also included is a 3.5mm to 3.5mm aux cable, so you can listen to music in passive mode. The ear cups are removable for easy washing. The XM5s also have rechargeable batteries that can provide up to 20 hours of playtime. They come with a rapid charging system that charges twice as fast as standard USB headphones.
2. Bose QuietComfort 35
The Bose QuietComfort 35/QC35 II Wireless 2018 are more flexible than the Audio-Technica's ATH-DSR9BT Wireless headphones thanks to their extremely comfortable fit, well-balanced sound profile and ANC feature that blocks out a lot of background noise. The Bose headphones come with a 20-hour battery, are more convenient to charge and can still be used with a mobile even if the battery is dead. This makes them a great choice for those who are looking for headphones that can be used as commuter or travel headphones.
These premium Bose headphones come with a button that activates Google Assistant, which will play music as well as answer trivia questions and also read notifications from your smartphone. These headphones have excellent noise cancelling capabilities. They're a bit old-fashioned by 2020 standards but you can get excellent deals.
As with other Bose ANC headphones, the QC35s are capable of cancelling out ambient noise and their noise reduction technology has advanced over time. However they're not the top ANC headphones out there in comparison to contemporary counterparts and audiophiles should consider looking elsewhere for a better sound experience.
The QC35s also have the ability to connect to two devices at once and also "audio share" with a person. This is a great option for those who want to listen to music while talking with another person. They're also a popular choice for frequent travelers, and they sport that classic Bose look that many people appreciate. SlickWraps or Skin Sticker covers for decals are readily available at a reasonable price when you wish to personalize your QC35s.
3. Sony WH-1000XM4
The WH-1000XM4s made by Sony don't change much in terms of comfort or aesthetics however their noise cancellation technology is a brand new beast. Sony has replaced the system-on-chip (SoC) for a brand new one, which it claims allows it to better detect and respond to ambient audio in real-time, reducing high- and mid-frequency sounds by using its Dual Noise Sensor technology.
Two feedforward microphones in each earcup record ambient sound. This is then processed by QN1 noise cancelling processor to reduce it rapidly without affecting the quality of your audio. The result is an audio quality that is comparable to the best headphones in this price range.
There's even a sensitivity control which lets you alter the noise cancellation according to your preferences. If you're in a public space for instance you may need a little bit of ambient sound to filter through, while at home you'll want a more secluded listening experience. This feature makes use of geo-location to determine the appropriate setting based on your destination.
The WH1000XM4s can be used for making hands-free phone calls. They also come with a 30 hour battery life and fast charging capabilities. They also feature a strong Bluetooth 5.0 connection with support for multipoint as well as NFC. In my tests I noticed that the remastering of Paul McCartney’s Flaming pie was lively and clear, while rough mixes and home recordings also sound clear.
Download the Sony Headphones Connect companion app to maximize the performance of these headphones. You can customize the EQ and take advantage of convenience features like Bluetooth multipoint. It also unlocks cool new features, like Sony's 360 Reality Audio immersive sound mastering process.
4. Sony WH-CH720N
The Sony WH-CH720N headphones are excellent choice if you're looking to buy a pair that offers excellent active noise cancellation at an affordable price. The 710N Wireless is an improvement over its predecessor with improved ANC performance, and superior sound quality. They also have an elongated design and up to 35 hours of battery life.
However, if you're looking for top-of-the-line features such as LDAC Bluetooth support and Smart Listening with voice assistant integration, these headphones aren't for you. They don't come with a carry case, auto-pause feature, or foldable earcups which makes them difficult to travel with.
The build quality of the WH-CH720N is decent, but not as good an 1000XM5. The earcups and the headband are made of plastic which is a breeze and comfortable to wear for long periods but isn't built to withstand rigorous use or the occasional tumble on hard surfaces. The design is also a little bulky and the earcups can creak when you move your head. The controls are simple to use, however, with tactile buttons that provide an excellent click-based feedback. One press of the power button turns ANC on and off, whereas pressing and holding it prompts you to turn on Sony's Adaptive Audio Control feature. This feature allows you select a preset profile that is based on your location or the way you use the headphones.
The WH-CH720N noise cancelling wireless headphones are one of the most affordable models on the market. For the money you get top ANC, excellent sound comfortable, and a lightweight design. You can also expect up to 35 hours of battery life. If you're a frequent commuter, these headphones are worth checking out.
5. Earfun Air Pro
Earfun's headsets and earbuds are renowned for their value and the Air Pro is no exception. They're great for music and calls, and their ANC technology blocks a lot of noise without making your ears feel uncomfortable. These headphones also have numerous features that are available in headphones that cost more than twice as more.
The earbuds have a lot of emphasis in the bass range, which adds a rumble to most tracks. Instruments and lead vocals remain bright and clear. This makes them ideal for a range of music, although they may sound a little loud for some. They have a very consistent frequency response, so they sound the same no matter the content you are listening.
We played Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On, and the earbuds did a fantastic job of celebrating the track's bass-heavy opening with energy and zeal. Stormzy's Vossi Bop was a similarly fluid listen with the treble shining through the layered vocals as well as the percussion.
Voice quality is top-notch even in noisy environments. The earbuds feature the latest Qualcomm chip that ensures background noises, clicks, and other distractions are kept to low levels. This is the case even when talking on the London Underground during rush hour.
The Bluetooth connectivity of the earbuds is also excellent, with a small number of issues in our testing. They connect quickly and with low latency to iOS and Android devices. They are IPX5 waterproof, so you can use them in rain or for workouts. However they shouldn't be submerged in water. They also come with a portable case that holds two and a half batteries, which is great to take on trips.
