The Companies That Are The Least Well-Known To Watch In The Headphones Noise Cancelling Industry
Which Over the Ear Headphones Are the Best?

Noise-cancelling headphones are an ideal solution for those who love to listen, whether you're at work or commuting on the train. But which ones are the most effective?

With over the ear headphones with noise cancelling that is a step up in sound quality, and a wealth of features, Sony's new flagship headphones offer exceptional value. From the raucous chorus to Sinead O'Connor's trembling bridge, these headphones deliver superb detail and realism.

1. Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony is a pro at noise cancellation, and its WH1000XM5 headphones are the best iteration of this series. This model is a great pair of headphones, specifically for those who commute or travel. They're comfortable, feature multipoint technology to connect two devices simultaneously and have the most advanced ANC Sony has produced yet. They're also light and provide about 27 hours of playback with no charging, which is plenty to last a week's worth traveling or one long-haul flight.

The WH1000XM5s are sleek and minimal in design. They are made from ABS, which is a recyclable and recycled plastic. The branding is minimal, but there is the "Sony" logo on each hinge of each earcup. The headband and earcups have soft, plush material that is comfortable for all heads with the exception of the largest. The earcups can be adjusted to fit you perfectly.

In contrast to previous models, which were focused on reducing low frequency noise, the XM5s amplify the sound waves at higher frequencies to cancel out ambient noise. This improves the overall quality of the sound, and can help reduce engine and cabin noises on flights. The XM5s has an additional processing unit that helps increase noise cancellation on planes. The audio app can also adjust your listening environment based on the pressure of the air.

The WH-1000XM5s comes with an integrated voice assistant that is simple to use, and it works with Alexa as well as Google Assistant, Siri, and many more. You can also pair the XM5s to other Sony audio products to enable multi-room music playback and stereo separation. They are compatible with Bluetooth high-bitrate streaming audio using Sony's LDAC but not aptX or HD.

2. Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless

Sennheiser has been manufacturing headphones for more than 50 years. You can expect a premium sound quality and a comfortable fit. With their latest headphones, dubbed Momentum 4 Wireless, they offer both. They've redesigned their design to eliminate a few characteristic elements that gave their earlier models the look of an aviator. They also upgraded active noise cancellation by using their latest Adaptive Noise Cancellation Technology. They've rated these headphones to last 60 hours of listening time with ANC enabled, which is more than double the battery life of most other competitors.

The new model is more compact, since it folds down and is smaller. They're made with artificial PU leather for the replaceable headband and ear pads which feel comfortable on my ear even if I wear them all day at work. They are also not very tight, which means you can wear them for long flights, or even during your workouts.

The sound is smooth and clear, however there are some peaks that can add a bit of muddiness to mixes. The bass is overemphasised, adding some extra punch and thump to genres like EDM or hip-hop. It's not a big deal however it could be a problem for some listeners. The high-mid is a little uneven balance which pushes instruments and vocals to the forefront of mixes but at the expense of bringing out sibilants into certain songs.

The Sennheiser momentum 4 wireless comes with all the standard features such as Bluetooth wireless connectivity, a transparent mode that blends outside sounds into your music to improve awareness, and mobile app support for pre-set and custom EQ options. They can also be used with a 3.5mm cable if you're connecting your phone to it via wire. They are able to connect to your device via SBC, AAC HD, and aptX Adaptive codes, and they are able to reduce the latency by up to one quarter second.

3. B&W PX7 S2

The original PX7s were a top pick on many lists of best Bluetooth headsets, thanks to their excellent ANC and sound quality. The PX7s, as with many wireless headphones, were becoming old and needed a new look. Therefore, the PX7S2. B&W not only changed the design however, they also made improvements to ANC and added voice-calling features.

The PX7 S2 headphones are very light, making them comfortable for long listening sessions. The design of the PX7 S2 is basically the same as the previous model. It has the cool oval aluminium top-plate for the earcups, the hook-like accent that slides instead of clicks when you expand the headband and the physical buttons. The earcups are smaller, however, and the headband is a bit less substantial overall.

The software of B&W lets you modify EQ settings for treble and bass but you don't get as much control over the mix of those two elements like you do on more expensive headphones. A Quick Action button on the left earcup switch on the various modes of the environment. It can also be configured within the Bowers & Wilkins Music app to activate your device's voice assistant.

The PX7 S2 sounds great for all musical styles, and has a soundstages that have plenty of width and good separation between the various elements of sound. It's especially impressive for selections that feature acoustic instrumentation like Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata, Op. 19, by pianist Yuja Wang and cellist Gautier Capeucon, with a woody tone and a sense of air. It's also able to handle heavier fare as well, thanks to the bass power and mid-range clarity on Entombed's fusion of garage and death-n'-roll, Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth providing an overwhelming soundscape while still allowing to be able to discern the vocals of Lars-Goran Petrov's grittier growl.

4. Bose QuietComfort 35

Bose was one of the first companies to bring active noise cancelling headphones into the mainstream. They held the market for years but now they must compete with more modern headsets which offer more features and better audio quality. QuietComfort 35 remains a great choice for anyone looking to listen to their music or podcasts without hums or rumbles.

The default sound profile is balanced, and they're comfortable to wear. The ANC is great at removing background noise. However, it tends to emphasize lower frequencies more than other headphones such as the Sony WH1000XM5.

If you're looking for a pair of headphones that can be used to listen to audiobooks or podcasts The QC35s come with an impressive noise cancellation mode that cuts down on ambient noises while keeping you isolated from the sounds of the world around you. The QC35s let you connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and also "audio-share", so you can listen to a song on one pair of headphones and answer an incoming phone call from the other set of headphones.

The Bose Connect App is decent but it doesn't offer the full EQ features of other headphone apps. The QC35s are also utilized in wired mode by using an audio cable, however the quality of sound takes a huge loss and they don't have the same battery life as wireless models.

The QC35s have an established Bose design that might not appeal to some people as the more sleek designs of other manufacturers. You can add some personalization to your headphones by purchasing a decal-covered cover from companies like SlickWraps or Skin Sticker. You'll also be able change the color of the earcups and the headband later this year, much like you can do with the previous QC25 model.

5. Sony WH-1000XM3

Sony's WH-1000XM3 are among the top wireless headphones with active noise cancellation that you can purchase right now. They're more expensive than Anker Soundcore Q20 Wireless but they isolate more background noise. The app is also superior and comes with a variety of sound customization options.

The XM3's excellent sound quality is one of the main reasons why they're popular, and they've been upgraded since their introduction to provide even better performance. They're equipped with a little more clarity in the frequency spectrum. Their noise cancelling is better at all levels of volume. They also have upgraded features like Quick Attention mode and Speak-to chat. They also have a new feature called Adaptive Sound Control that automatically adjusts how much external sound is let in based on where you are and what you're doing.

There are some issues, however. The treble can sound occasionally a bit overpowering and the midrange sounds slightly recessed. They do have the potential to boost the bass too much on certain tracks, making them sound too heavy and full. You can fix this via the Sony app or in the headphone setting.

The XM3s are an excellent pair of headphones, particularly for commuters or frequent travelers. They're more comfortable, look and feel more durable and premium than the JBL Live 650 BTNC Wireless, and they have a more powerful battery, and one of our favorite noise cancelling features available on the market. They're also more versatile and more suited for use on the go than Audio-Technica's ATH-M50X wireless, although their noise cancelling is less impressive. They're not waterproof, which could be a problem for some.
