Best Over-Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones
Whether you commute on noisy public transport or work with chatty colleagues Noise cancelling headphones provide the sound buffer you need to keep your focus. We examined the comfort, audio quality, and the ability to block out high-frequency continuous sounds like restaurant chatter, or short-duration incidental noises like the ringing of a phone or clacking keys.
Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony's WH1000XM5 headphones are a top option for high-end ANC. The WH-1000XM5 was first released in 2016 and is an excellent option for anyone who wants to listen to their favorite podcasts or music without distractions. The latest version of the series marks its first major overhaul and features a number of exciting new features. The headphones are also environmentally sustainable, without plastic packaging. They offer excellent noise cancellation and crisp audio.
The WH-1000XM5 is unmatched in its ability to cancel out noise when activated. Attaching a pair of headphones to your head creates a cone of silence that can block out engine sounds on trains and subways as well as the whirr of HVAC systems, and even the sounds of neighboring conversations. They're also among top ANC headphones for blocking out low-frequency drones and bass hums.
Ambient Sound Control is another fantastic feature. It alters the acoustic balance in the headphones based on the environment. For example, if you're at home listening to your favourite album, the WH-1000XM5 will switch to a more immersive listening experience. On the other the other hand in the event that you're walking down the streets, they'll switch to a more focused sound profile to provide you with more awareness of your surroundings.
The ear cups of the WH-1000XM5 feature touch-sensitive gesture controls on the right side which can be used to play, pause, and change tracks. You can also use a voice assistant to find content, alter volume and make hands-free calls. The headphones boast an remarkable frequency response consistency and provide an impressive, full stereo image. They also have a group delay that's extremely precise and helps to maintain a consistent soundstage.
The WH-1000XM5s can be connected to two devices simultaneously. This is especially useful when you're using your laptop to listen to music while making phone calls using your smartphone. They come with a built-in microphone and an USB-C port to charge. The headphones include an audio cable that can be used for direct analog playback. Battery life is about 30 hours. This could last for up to a week, or even a long flight.
Bose QuietComfort 45
The Bose QuietComfort 45 is the latest version of the premium headphones maker's flagship model. It launched in September 2021 and is priced lower than the WH-1000XM4 from Sony and its 700 sibling by about PS320, $329, or $439 AUD. In terms of features it comes with top-of-the-line active noise cancellation and features like voice assistant support and automatic pause when you remove the headphones. The design is also much more comfortable than the previous versions. There are some things to keep in mind, however. The buttons on the back of the ear cups are now sensitive to pressure and require pressure to activate, so it could be difficult for some to adjust to. You can adjust ANC and switch to an "aware" mode that allows ambient sound however, you are not able to completely shut off the sound.
However, the headphones provide excellent performance and are a solid purchase for anyone who is looking for a high-end pair of headphones to wear on a plane, train or while working from home. They come with a long battery life as well as excellent noise cancellation and clear audio. They also come with multipoint Bluetooth which allows them to be paired to two devices at once and switch between them with the press of a button. They also have an app that's not as flexible as some of their competitors, but still offers numerous useful features.
The QC45s feature a highly effective active noise cancellation mode. It can be too loud at times. The passive EQ modes are, however, more balanced and allow you to be more in control of the sound signature of your music. If you're listening to music that has lots of cymbal sparkle it is possible that you will find the headphones slightly grating. However, it is fixable by reducing the frequency range of 3-20kHz within the EQ settings of your music player.
The QC45s are top-quality ANC at a reasonable cost. Some may be disappointed with the omissions of some features, such as adjustable ANC/transparency, EQ and some slight decreases in call quality. They are also comfortable to wear for a long time and come with fast-charging via the USB-C port.
Shure Aonic 50
Shure's Aonic 50 are a premium pair of headphones that place the focus on audio quality. Their drivers utilize a massive 50mm dynamic driver, and are packed with high-resolution codecs to provide the highest quality music playback over Bluetooth. The headphones offer a balanced sound with a rich and detailed sound in all frequencies. They also provide a natural sense of space and position.
They're a bit heavier than the other models at 334g, but they are comfortable enough for long listening sessions. The headband is placed on top of your head without putting too much pressure and the earcups are padded to make them extremely comfortable. They're also very mobile. They fold flat and can easily be put away in the carrying case.
The earcups on the right side are standard controls, including playback, volume and power/pairing. You can switch between noise-cancelling mode, neutral mode, and what Shure calls "Environment Mode" with a slider close to the top. The Environment Mode permits more outside sound to leak through. This could be useful when you want to be aware of your surroundings. The controls are excellent, but there is some time between pressing the buttons and what happens (i.e. If you press play while on a phone call, you could end up playing music in your ears instead of picking up mom. They don't come with built-in microphones for voice command support, but they do feature an audio response from Google Assistant and their mics are great at filtering out background noise in phone conversations.
They run on one battery that lasts for up to 20 hours, which will be plenty for most people. The USB cable is included to charge your phone. It's not as convenient as Bluetooth however, you can listen to music while you recharge. They also work with audio devices that have 2.5mm ports, which means you can travel with them.
Monoprice BT-600ANC
The Monoprice BT600ANC Bluetooth noise cancelling over ear headphones have all the features you would want in a pair, but at just a fraction of the cost. They feature high-quality Qualcomm aptX HD Audio, an advanced type of Active Noise Cancelling and an easy-to-fold design that makes them easy to put in bags for backpacks or in a carry bag. These headphones are great for students and commuters because they feature a long-lasting battery that allows you to listen throughout the throughout the day. The headphones also come with comfortable touch controls that allow you to swipe or tap in order to change the volume and skip tracks.
The BT-600ANC headphones sport a minimalistic design that reminds us of the Monoprice M1000ANC headphones we reviewed last year. They're matte gray and aren't branded at all. They do not stand out in public but they have an incredibly soft, comfortable fit that will appeal to most ears. The compact dimensions of these headphones and the carrying case included make them ideal for taking on the road.
The earcups are covered in leatherette, and offer excellent isolation via passive. best over the ear headphones noise cancelling is also soft and has plenty of adjustability, without being too bulky or slouchy. The headband is wide enough to accommodate glasses wearers, which means they'll fit most people.
Monoprice ANC is very effective, and it does not sound as loud as other brands. They have a slight increase between 100 and 200Hz, which provides a fuller sound to bass notes. The opening of Good 4 U, by Olivia Rodrigo, shows a full response. They have a sharp drop off in the upper frequencies above ten kHz, so cymbals and shakers won't sound as clear and crisp.
There are three ANC modes to cycle through: low, medium and high. The low mode is good for reducing ambient noise, but does not block out traffic and loud conversations. The medium setting is appropriate for most environments, while the high setting will keep you isolated from all noise, except for your music. The touch-sensitive controls on the earcups are a bit difficult to use initially. Swiping up or down on the pad regulates the volume, and tapping or swiping left or right changes the track. Double-taping can be used to stop the music or answer to a phone call. It takes some time to get used to this system however once you get used to it, you will find it to be extremely useful.
