Sony Headphones Review - The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones
The fifth-generation version of Sony's noise-cancelling headphones look a little different from the previous model but they sound as good. They're comfortable, lightweight and boast a range of features, including Speak-to-Chat, Quick Attention mode wear detection, AI-powered DSEE Extreme audio upscaling.
The ANC is powerful, reducing train noises to an ambient rumble. A "pass through" option allows you to hear outside sounds if you want.
1. Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony's headphones are consistently among the top in the market when it comes to noise cancelling. And the fifth generation of WH1000XM5s are the same, providing one of the best experiences we've had with noise cancelling headphones in recent times. When you put on the headphones and turn on noise cancellation, you're entering a world of silence. Engine noises as well as HVAC systems, creaking metal, and even conversations with your neighbors all go out of the window.
The XM5s also impress on the audio front. Their wide soundstage allows all elements of a song to shine and breathe. On Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy for example, the drums pound with a satisfying amount force and power and soaring vocals are a perfect fit throughout the mix.
noise cancelling headset with mic that make the XM5s standout are their intelligent interactions with your smart device. They can detect when they are being removed from the head and then pause the music. They also can detect that you are on a noisy highway and automatically lower the noise cancelling volume.
The WH-1000XM5s are also very environmentally friendly. They are made of recycled plastic and acrylonitrile styrene (ABS), with a headband made of premium fabric. They come with a collapsible case that folds into itself, forming an incredibly compact pouch. Also included is a 3.5mm to 3.5mm aux cable, so you can listen to music in passive mode. The ear cups are also removable to make it easy to clean. The XM5s come with a rechargeable battery which provides up to 20-hours of playing time. They come with a rapid charging system that charges twice as fast as traditional USB headphones.
2. Bose QuietComfort 35
The Bose QuietComfort 35 I/QC35 II Wireless 2018, with their comfortable fit and balanced sound profile and ANC technology that blocks a significant amount of background noise, are more versatile than Audio-Technica ATH-DSR9BT Wireless Headphones. The Bose headphones have 20 hours of battery life, and are more convenient to charge and can still be used with a smartphone when the battery is out. This makes them a better option for those who are looking for headphones that can be used as commuter headphones or travel headphones.
These premium Bose headphones come with a button that activates Google Assistant, which will play music, answer trivia questions, and also read notifications from your smartphone. They have outstanding noise cancellation capabilities, and even though they're getting long by 2020 standards (and have successors in their sibling line the QC35) however, you can still get great bargains on them.
Like other Bose ANC headphones, the QC35s do an excellent job of cancelling out ambient noise and their noise reduction technology has improved over the years. However they're not the top ANC headphones on the market in comparison to more recent competitors and audiophiles should consider looking elsewhere for a better sound experience.
The QC35s are also able to connect to two devices at once, and can "audio share" with a friend. This is a great option for those who want to listen to music while talking with another person. They are popular with frequent flyers and feature the classic Bose design that people adore. If you're looking to dress up your QC35s with some personalization, decal cover-ups like SlickWraps and Skin Sticker are available at affordable prices.
3. Sony WH-1000XM4
The WH-1000XM4s made by Sony don't change much in terms of aesthetics or comfort however their noise cancellation technology is a totally new beast. The company has replaced the old system-on chip (SoC) with a brand new one that it claims will allow it to listen and respond more precisely ambient sound in real-time by reducing mid- and high-frequency noises with its Dual Noise sensor technology.
Two feedforward mics in each earcup absorb ambient sound, which is then processed by the QN1 noise-cancelling processor to reduce it as fast as is possible without affecting the quality of your music. The result is a level of noise reduction that rivals the best headphones at this price point.
There's a sensitivity dial which allows you to alter the noise cancellation to suit your needs. If you're in a public space for instance you may want some ambient sound to be filtered through, while at home you'll prefer a more closed-off listening experience. This feature also uses geo-location to automatically apply the right setting based on where you're headed.
The WH-1000XM4s are able to be used for hands-free calls and come with an impressive 30 hours of battery life, along with quick charging capabilities. They also boast a robust Bluetooth 5.0 connection, with support for multipoint and NFC. In my tests I noticed that the remastering of Paul McCartney’s Flaming pie sounded lively and clear, while rough mixes and recordings from home also sounded clear and crisp.
Download the Sony Headphones Connect companion app to get the most from these headphones. This lets you customize the EQ settings and offers convenience features such as Bluetooth multipoint, and also allows you to access some of the most exciting new stuff - such as access to Sony's 360 Reality Audio immersive surround-sound mastering process that breathes life into older music.
4. Sony WH-CH720N
If you're seeking a pair of headphones that provide excellent active noise cancellation for a budget-friendly price, the Sony WH-CH720N are an excellent option. The 710N Wireless is an improvement over its predecessor and offers more efficient ANC performance and better sound quality. The 710N Wireless also features an elongated design and battery life of up to 35 hours.
However, if you're looking for premium features like LDAC Bluetooth support and Smart Listening with voice assistant integration, these headphones aren't suitable for you. Also, they don't come with a carry case or auto-pause functionality and the earcups aren't foldable which could make them tough to travel with.
The build quality of the WH-CH720N is decent, but not as good as the aforementioned 1000XM5. The headband and earcups are constructed of plastic. They are light and comfortable for long periods of time, but they're not built to withstand intense use or even a few falls on hard surfaces. The design is also quite bulky and the earcups are likely to creak when you move your head. The controls are easy to use, with tactile buttons that provide excellent clicky feedback. The ANC is toggled off and on by pressing the power switch. Pressing and holding the button will activate Sony's Adaptive audio Control. This feature allows you select a preset profile based on the location you are in or how you use the headphones.
The WH-CH720N is one the best-value headphones for wireless noise cancelling headphones available on the market. For the price you'll get excellent ANC and excellent sound quality, lightweight comfort and up to 35 hours of battery life. These headphones are worth considering when you travel frequently.
5. Earfun Air Pro
Earfun's earbuds and headsets are well-known for their value, and the Air Pro is no exception. They're efficient for calls and enthralling for music, and their ANC blocks a significant amount of noise without making you feel like your ears are being suffocated. They also come with numerous features that are found in headphones that cost nearly twice as more.
The earbuds are over-emphasized in the bass area, which can create a rumble on many tracks. Instruments and lead vocals remain clear and bright. This makes them ideal for a variety of music. However, they could sound a bit stuttery to some. The frequency response is very consistent, meaning they sound exactly the identical no matter what you listen to.
We played Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On and the earbuds took to the track's bassy opening with enthusiasm and enthusiasm. Stormzy's Vossi Bop was a similarly fluid listen, with the treble showcasing the layered vocals as well as percussion.
On the phone, voice quality is excellent even in noisy surroundings. The earbuds feature the most recent Qualcomm chip which ensures background noises, clicks, and other distractions are kept to low levels. This is true even when talking next to London Underground during rush hour.
The earbuds' Bluetooth connectivity is also very good, with little to no issues during our testing. They pair and connect quickly, with minimal latency with iOS and Android devices. They are IPX5 waterproof, meaning you can use them in exercise or rain. However they shouldn't be submerged in water. They also come with a movable case that can hold two and a half charges that are great for travel.
