Which Over the Ear Headphones Are the Best?

If you're on the train or at work the noise-cancelling headphones can be an absolute must for those who love to listen. But which ones are the most effective?

Sony's flagship headphones are a fantastic value. They feature a brand new design and a superior audio quality, as well as enviable features. They can capture every detail, from Sinead's trembling Bridge to the powerful chorus.

1. Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony is the master of noise cancellation, and its WH1000XM5 headphones represent the top model in this line. The WH-1000XM5s sport an elegant, minimalist design and are made from recycled and recyclable plastic referred to as acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). The branding is minimal, but there is the 'Sony' logo on the hinge of each earcup. The headband and earcups have a soft, plush material that is comfortable for all head sizes with the exception of the largest. The earcups can be adjusted so that you can find the ideal fit for your needs.

Contrary to previous models that focused on reducing low-frequency noise, the XM5s amplify sound waves with high frequency to cancel out ambient noise. This improves overall sound quality, and can help reduce cabin and engine noise on flights. The XM5s are equipped with a second processor to enhance noise cancellation more for airplanes and the audio app will also automatically adjust your listening environment based on data on air pressure.

Other features of the WH1000XM5s include an enhanced voice assistant that is easy to use and can be used with Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri and many more. The XM5s are compatible with other Sony audio devices to provide stereo separation and multi-room music. They are compatible with Bluetooth high-bitrate streaming audio through Sony's LDAC, but not aptX or HD.

2. Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless

Sennheiser has been manufacturing headphones for more than 50 years. You can expect a premium sound quality and a cosy fit. They've delivered on both counts with their latest headphones, called the Momentum 4 Wireless. They have reworked their design to eliminate some characteristic elements that gave their previous models their aviator-style headset look. They also improved active noise cancellation by using their latest Adaptive Noise Cancellation Technology. They've rated these headphones to last 60 hours of listening with ANC enabled, which doubles the battery life of most other competitors.

The new model is also more portable, since it folds down and is a bit smaller. They're made of synthetic leather that can be used to make the replaceable headband and earpads which feel comfortable on my noggin even if I wear them for the entire day at work. There's not a lot of clamping force to keep them in place either, so they should remain comfortable on flights and during workouts that last longer.

The sound is clear and well-balanced, though there are some high-pitched peaks in the mid- and high-mid which cause slight muddiness in mixes. The bass is overemphasized which adds extra impact and thump to genres such as EDM or hip hop. It's not a major issue however some listeners might be annoyed. The high-mid also isn't balanced, bringing vocals and instruments forward in the mix but at the cost of bringing out some sibilants.

The Sennheiser momentum 4 wireless has all of the usual features such as Bluetooth wireless connectivity, a transparent mode that blends outside sounds into your music to improve awareness, and mobile app support for pre-set and custom EQ options. You can also use a 3.5mm cord to connect your phone. They can utilize SBC, AAC, aptX HD and aptX Adaptive codecs to connect to your device and they're able to reduce the latency to as little as a quarter of a second which is fantastic.

3. B&W PX7 S2

The original PX7s were a top choice on many lists of the best Bluetooth headsets due to their excellent ANC and sound quality. The PX7s, as with many wireless headphones, were becoming old and needed a refresh. Therefore, the PX7S2. B&W didn't just change the design however, they also made improvements to ANC and added features for voice calling.

The PX7 S2 headphones are extremely light, making them comfortable for long listening sessions. The design of the PX7 S2 is largely similar to the previous model. This includes the stylish oval-shaped aluminium top-plate for the earcups, the hook-like accent that slides rather than clicks when you expand the headband and the physical buttons. The earcups, however, are smaller and the headband is less substantial.

The software of B&W lets you modify EQ settings for treble and bass, however, you don't have as much control over the mix between the two components like you do on more expensive headphones. A Quick Action button on the left earcup switch on the environmental modes and can be adjusted in the Bowers & Wilkins Music app to call the voice assistant on your device.

The PX7 S2 sounds great for the majority of musical styles, with a soundstages that have plenty of width and good separation between the various sounds. It is particularly impressive on music that has acoustic instrumentation such as Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata, Op. 19, by pianist Yuja Wang and cellist Gautier Capeucon, with acoustic instrumental tones that give an airy feel. It can handle heavier fare too. The bass power and midrange clarity of Entombed's garage/deathn'roll crossover, To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth The album is a wall of noise while still allowing listeners to be able to hear vocal details such as Lars-Goran Petrov's gritty growl.

4. Bose QuietComfort 35

Bose was one of the first companies to bring active noise cancelling headphones to the mainstream. They held the market for a long time, but now they must compete with more modern headsets which offer more features and better audio quality. However the QuietComfort 35 is still a ideal choice for anyone who wants to listen to podcasts and music without being interrupted by constant buzzing and rumbles.

They're also comfortable to wear and come with a a well-balanced default sound profile. The ANC does a great job of eliminating background noise, though it tends to emphasize lower frequencies more than newer headphones, such as the Sony WH-1000XM5.

The QC35s are a fantastic pair of headphones that can be used to listen to podcasts and audiobooks. They have a passive noise cancellation mode which reduces ambient sounds, but still allowing you to be completely isolated from the world around you. The QC35s can also connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and "audio-share" so that you can play something on one pair of headphones and then answer an incoming call from the other.

The Bose Connect app is decent but doesn't provide the full EQ options offered by other headphone apps. The QC35s are also used in wired mode with an audio cable, however the sound quality takes a major drop and they don't offer the same battery life as wireless models.

The QC35s have an established Bose style that may not be as appealing to some people than the more modern designs of other brands. You can personalize your headphones by purchasing a decal cover from companies like SlickWraps or Skin Sticker. Later this year you'll be able to customize the color of the earcups as well as the headband, just like with the QC25 model from earlier.

5. Sony WH-1000XM3

Sony's WH-1000XM3 are among the top wireless headphones that have active noise cancellation you can buy right now. They're more expensive than the Anker Soundcore Life Q20 Wireless, but they are able to block out more ambient noise and feel much better-built. The app is also more advanced and has a wide range of options for sound customization.

The XM3s offer a fantastic audio quality, and since their launch, they've been upgraded to deliver an even better experience. The latest feature, Adaptive sound control, automatically adjusts the amount of external sound that is allowed in based on where you are and what you're doing.

They're not without some issues, though. The treble can sound sometimes a bit loud and the midrange is slightly receding. over ear headphones noise cancelling have the tendency to increase the bass too much on some tracks, which makes them sound too heavy and full. But that's something you can address in the headphone settings or via EQ adjustment in the Sony app.

The XM3s are an excellent pair headphones, especially for commuters or frequent travelers. They are more comfortable, look and feels premium, and are more durable over the JBL Live 650 BTNC wireless. They also have a more powerful battery and one of the best features for noise cancellation available. They're also more flexible and more mobile-friendly than the Audio-Technica ATH M50X Wireless, even though they have less impressive noise cancellation. And they're not waterproof, which could be a deal-breaker for some.
