The jar was hand coiled and hand decorated by Ruby and is truly big, measuring 21 inches broad by 16 inches tall. I am really taken with the medallions of flowers surrounding the Zia fowl. Also, please observe the buy-it-now value that's fairly a bit lower than regular retail! Do check for prices on items comparable in size and quality. Although the fowl appears like a Zia roadrunner, its segmented body is paying homage to an Egyptian bird.
Every Zia Pueblo pottery piece is purchased immediately from the artist, so it's guaranteed authentic. Fellow potter and artists Ralph Aragon modeled the trophies for the Outstanding Offensive and Defensive Players from traditional leather shields. Through classic photographs, richly interpretive text, and the ceramics themselves, the exhibition reveals the identities off Zia’s master potters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Their descendants are represented as nicely, bringing one of many great Pueblo pottery traditions into the current.
Designs are painted on before firing, traditionally with a brush fashioned from yucca fiber. North of the Jemez river and west of Albuquerque is the pueblo of Zia. Favorite designs at Zia embrace an undulating rainbow band, giant polychrome birds, and abstracted floral designs.
Ruby Panana is a member of the Coyote Clan at Zia Pueblo. She was born on April 8, 1954, the daughter of the great potter Seferina Pino Bell who taught he the artwork of forming clay into magnificent works of craftsmanship. Ruby went through the fourth grade at the Zia Day School and then went to Albuquerque for her higher grades. While in highschool, she helped her mother with her pottery, after which started to make some small items on her personal. She got "bored" and went on to the University of Albuquerque working in the direction of a teaching diploma. But at that point, her scholarship cash didn't cowl her bills, so she had to give up college.
Although she lives at Jemez Pueblo, Ruby creates a variety of the largest traditional pottery of Zia in the method of Trinidad Medina and Sofia Medina. Her work consists of polychrome jars, bowls, marriage ceremony vases, vases and canteens. But she is finest identified for the size of her pottery that finally ends up as massive, impressive impeccably painted work or true artwork.

Made from clay collected on the Pueblo, unpainted Zia Pueblo pottery turns a deep purple when fired. A white slip is commonly applied to create a buff-colored painting floor. Designs are largely painted in black and pink and orange hues. Then she pinched, smoothed, and burnished the floor before firing. Certain details of construction are virtually distinctive to Zia. For instance, Zia potters add a coil to the surface floor of the previous coil when constructing a vessel.
Ruby's expertise has been acknowledged repeatedly in juried competitions of American Indian pottery. Her first ribbon was a FIRST PLACE in the New Mexico State Fair in 1985 and she has been successful awards ever since. She won each a First Place and Second Place in 1998 at Indian Market in Santa Fe and extra recently gained the JUDGE'S AWARD in March 1999 on the Heard Museum Guild Market. A transient history of Zia and a common description of a few Zia Pottery designs can be discovered beneath the Zia section.
Today the Zia neighborhood farms and raises cattle and livestock, maintaining a robust sense of tradition and id. Artists of Zia are known for producing lovely conventional work, especially their handmade pottery. Their redware and polychrome pottery usually features designs painted in brown or black and the chook motif that may be a signature component of Zia pottery.
