Zia Up To Date Pueblo Pottery
By strategically placing rocks in the paths, they controlled the flow of water to their crops. The pottery of small Pueblos typically has related characteristics to that of neighboring Pueblos. But despite its size, Zia Pueblo’s pottery type and designs are very distinct from different Native American Indian pueblos’. What I call "sloppy" pots had been made by Burley-Winter, Zanesville and sometimes McCoy.
The period of standard glaze–the shiny brown finish used by Weller, Loy-Nel-Art, Peters and Reed and Rozane–was at the flip of the Twentieth Century. Others have a completely dry or unglazed backside, and still others have wedge shapes on the bottom. This is an effective place to start to determine the nation of origin, if it is not proven. American Bisque used the wedge shapes routinely, so that's always my first guess on a piece with a dry wedge foot. Here's a good example of the American Bisque wedge foot (right). Beige clay was used by Rosemeade and a few eras of Dryden, primarily Kansas Dryden.
Winart Pottery made a drip glaze, such because the glaze on this Winart pitcher (right), that identifies much of their wares. Some American potteries went again to shiny glazes within the late Nineteen Thirties and 1950s, and thru the Sixties for lots of the firms. Much of the newer Roseville, not reproduction but Sixties era production, was a shiny glaze, however this began as early as 1937 with Ivory II production.
