Weather Stripping

Before putting in the weather stripping, wash the sash frames with mild soap and water and dry them with a cloth. Remove any paint that is old and caulk around the inside stops using an utility knife. Use a putty knife to protect the frame and carefully pry the stops apart. Replace the weather stripping.

The new weather stripping must be flexible enough to permit the sash's flexibility of movement, yet sturdy enough to remain in place when closed. Adhesive-backed foam tape is a popular choice. It is simple to use and comes in different thicknesses. Door sweeps are available in various sizes and types and can be put in on all kinds of windows and doors.

Examine the metal tabs on the new sash with the tabs on the old sash prior to you install it. If the tabs are of a different shape, they will not fit in the slot on the window frame correctly and you'll need to take the sash off and start over. Sash Cords
