Mental Health Services on the NHS
There has been an enormous rise in people seeking help for mental health issues, and the NHS has responded by offering services. This includes:
The Long Term Plan has made the commitment to increase the investment in mental health services faster than the NHS budget overall. This will include specialist work in suicide prevention.
Get assistance
One of four of us will have mental health issues at some moment in our lives. The good news is that there are plenty of different ways to get assistance and the majority of us recover after a while. It is crucial to know what help is available and who can offer it.
You can seek help from a variety of sources such as your GP (primary care medical doctor) or your local health center or a community mental health team. These teams comprise of nurses, occupational and psychotherapists, as well as speech therapists. They work with patients who require their services. You can receive individual or group therapy based on the kind of help you need.
Your GP will typically request you to fill out an application form so that they can refer you to a local mental health team. They will also talk to you about the kind of help you need. You will then be seen by a member of a mental health team, which could include a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker. In some cases the assessment and treatment will be carried out by a clinical nurse specialist. If you are experiencing crisis, call the NHS 111 helpline for immediate assistance. If you are already receiving mental health support, it is best to contact your primary team first, unless outside of hours, or on a weekend or a bank holiday.
The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health detailed plans to establish multidisciplinary mental health teams in the community that are linked to primary care networks. These teams will enhance the quality of the mental health services delivered to people experiencing a crisis, and will provide assistance to those within their communities and at home rather than in hospitals.
The plan also aims at making crisis services more accessible by reducing waiting times and opening more beds. It also proposes an ambulance for mental health and ensure that all ambulances are stocked with an individual who is a mental liaison nurse in the control room to ensure that patients who are suffering from mental illness are assisted in emergency situations.
Treatment options
The NHS offers a variety of treatment options for mental health issues. GPs are usually able to treat milder disorders, but more serious conditions will require an expert team. These teams operate across community and primary mental health services, as well as mental health hospitals. You can also seek assistance in a secure space should you be in a state of crisis.
Talking therapies are among the most common types of treatment for depression and anxiety. These programs, previously known as IAPT (Interactive Assessment and Psychotherapy), have seen their numbers of clients increase each year since they were launched in 2008. The NHS Long Term Plan has committed to expanding these services to 1.9 million people by 2023/2024.
Psychiatric medications are another crucial part of treatment. They can help alleviate symptoms by changing the way the brain's chemicals work. They can be used to minimize the adverse effects of other treatments. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate medicine for you.
A wide range of talking therapy options are available which include group therapy as well as individual therapy. Some of these can be delivered in person, but others can be done remotely. Some patients prefer treatment in person, but this is a personal decision. Mind is one of many organizations that offer support groups and courses. Their website contains a wealth of trustworthy information, but you should be aware that there's plenty of inaccurate or misleading information available on the internet regarding mental health issues.
The NHS is improving the quality of mental health care, but it struggles to meet the demand. In the UK there are 54 mental trusts. They receive the majority of funding for their services from clinical commissioning group. They are typically located in a specific area, but can be commissioned to deliver national services.
A key issue is the lack of resources to meet the demands of the rising population. There are concerns over the quality of care and the shortage of psychiatrists and nurses. The NHS is trying to improve the quality of care by introducing new ways of work and providing more training. It also introduces safer and more effective ways to treat people in crisis like mobile crisis teams and safe places.
We are here to help you
Since the NHS was established 70 years ago there have been a lot of positive changes for people with mental health issues. Treatment options have gotten more diverse and social barriers are being taken down. But there is more to be done.
Patients who are experiencing mental health issues need to be able to access the help they require quickly and easily. This is why the NHS is working hard to improve the quality of services for those who need these services. We will ensure that every acute hospital is without a mental health liaison in A&E departments and inpatient wards by 2020/21. 70% of these services will meet the 'core 24' standard by 2023/24. We will work towards achieving 100% coverage afterward.
We will also increase services for those who require them in the community, such as talking therapies, to give thousands of more people suffering from severe or common mental health issues the help they require. We will continue to work on the national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme so that more people are visited by therapists who are qualified, quicker.
The NHS provides free, confidential helplines to anyone who is struggling with mental health issues. Samaritans Mind and Rethink are some of the helplines available. These helplines are run by volunteers who provide an environment where you can talk to someone in a safe manner or offer advice and guidance about how to handle your mental health concerns.
In addition to that, there are a lot of local organizations that can offer support and guidance for people with mental health problems. These can include self-help guides, coping strategies, and activities to try. Many of these organizations offer face-toface support groups to those who would prefer it.
For students, there's the University's Open Door Team which offers the opportunity to visit a counselling center for those who are feeling depressed or stressed. There's also the Nightline student counselling service that provides confidential listening and support from experienced volunteers, or information on other services. Charities like Mind and Rethink are a great source of information and can offer support in many forms such as online and through local groups. They can also offer many classes and activities, from mindfulness to art groups that could be beneficial for people suffering from mental health issues.
mental health services private are under pressure and GPs are forced to make difficult decisions about which specialist services to refer their patients to. The doctor will take a patient's medical history into consideration and then refer them to a specialist they think will be able to help. They may send a referral to an NHS trust, or to an independent provider.
A mental health professional will then evaluate the referral and decide whether it's appropriate or not. If the specialist isn't pleased with the referral, they'll call the GP to discuss their decision and provide why. They may request the GP to modify the referral or request more details.
The referral to a local Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) can be made through the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS). The system allows doctors and other healthcare professionals send patients to either an initial clinical assessment for mental health or directly to an appointment. Not all CMHTs provide both options, and the system cannot be used for all types of mental health referrals.
A GP can refer a patient to a community mental health specialist service (CMT). These are usually run either by an extensive hospital or a local health care organization. CMTs are a great option for those who want to consult a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist but don't require inpatient care. They can also provide an early intervention program, where a psychiatrist collaborates with the counselor to help someone overcome a problem or improve their quality of life.
One of the major challenges that a CMT is to ensure that all referrals are assigned within the appropriate timeframe. One of the challenges is that many referrals are deemed as urgent, even though they might not be. This can lead to delays and over-working for people who aren't in a crisis.
To address this issue, a few CMHTs have tried to establish more uniform guidelines for what constitutes an urgent referral. This was achieved through a standardised form that asks the referrer if the case is urgent. The form includes a box that the referrer is able to tick when the referral is urgent.
