We only paid just over AUD$100 a night which is a bargain and there were cheaper room types. The Harmony Arch at the eastern end of Jalan Carpenter makes for a grand entrance to Kuching’s Chinatown. Next to the Merdeka Plaza shopping mall is a three story Textile Museum. It covers the different types of textiles produced by the different ethnic groups and tribes of the region, with fabrics, sample tools and displays on how they were made. Having learnt about the different cultural groups the day before it was interesting although it won’t be the best thing to do in Kuching for everyone.
Expect to find figurines, photographs, posters and a rare Egyptian mummified cat. The Astana (palace) always features on lists of the must-visit attractions in Kuching. Sitting elegantly on the banks of the River Sarawak, the 1870 colonial palace exudes grandeur.
Since the earliest days of the White Raj, when James Brook was granted control over Sarawak by the Sultan of Brunei, Kuching has been a town of trading and industry. As a result Kuching has been a magnet for immigration – in particular Chinese immigration. Small passenger boats cross the river between small wharves up and down the river. Crossing take a couple of minutes and cost just RM1 per person per trip if going directly to the other side. While Kuching Sarawak Tourism are walking along the river there is another of the worthwhile Kuching things to do – cross the river in one of the small boats. It makes sense that if there was a cat museum anywhere it’d be in Kuching.
The mountain lies within a national park, and can be reached from Kuching in about 30 minutes. The hike to the summit takes around four hours, and leads you through thick jungle and up to one of the best panoramic views of Sarawak anywhere in the region. A slightly easier two-hour hike will take you to a nearby waterfall, a perfect spot to sit and relax. Holding the title as Sarawak’s oldest and one of the state’s smallest, Bako National Park can be reached within an hour to the northeast of Kuching. After taking a boat to the park entrance, you can hike along colour-coded trails, visit beaches and go wildlife-spotting in the many habitats. Highlights include its resident population of endemic proboscis monkeys, slow loris and pangolins, as well as 190 species of birds, lizards and mammals.
We stayed with them for 3 nights observing their way of life and trying our hands at farming, hunting and fishing. Given the city’s name, it’s quite fitting that Kuching has several cat statues decorating public spaces. The Kuching South City Council Cat Statue, a white feline posing in front of Little Chinatown, became the first of many sculptures in the city. A favourite activity for visitors is to stroll along the streets in search of the statues and pose next to the giant felines.
You can find it in the crumbling layers of architecture and empire and in the streets and villages that hold stories of generations. When you visit Kuching, you need to do some exploratory digging, backed up with a historical timeline. “I remember when this all looked so very different,” said my guide, Rose as we drove through the city of Kuching – the capital of the western Borneo state of Sarawak where she was born and raised.
You can learn new skills from live demonstrations, such as bead making, weaving, and bamboo carving. Visitours tour on foot, walking between various traditional village buildings from various eras, tribes and lifestyles. You can, of course, go inside the houses and longhouses, be ready for a lot of steps and ladders, most of the houses are on stilts. It takes about 2 hours by car to get to Gunung Gading National Park from Kuching, so it’s possible to visit it as a day trip. And don’t forget the flora and fauna, including the strange-looking, big nosed, proboscis monkeys, flying squirrels and Bornean bearded pigs.
Kuching means cat in Malay, and as you will soon discover on a trip here, this is a city obsessed with cats. As this is an official state residence however, visitors are not permitted to enter the Astana grounds and you will have to make do with admiring this historical gem from afar. The most iconic part of Kuching, without a doubt, is its scenic waterfront which is where all the main action happens. For many people, Borneo is synonymous with orangutans, and Semenggoh Nature Reserve is one of the best places to see them in the world.
Additionally, walking is a great way to stay active and promote physical fitness, helping you to stay healthy and energised while exploring the city. Known for its rich cultural heritage, delicious local cuisine, and lush natural landscapes, Kuching is the perfect destination for those seeking an authentic Malaysian experience. I stayed at the Grand Margherita Hotel – a long-standing hotel in the city marked by one of the city’s famous cat statues. This hotel is popular because it is situated on the quieter waterfront with beautiful views, including a pool that overlooks the Sarawak River.
