The Main Issue With Mental Health Services NHS, And How You Can Repair It
Mental Health Services on the NHS

The NHS has responded to the rise in mental health problems by offering services. This includes:

The Long Term Plan has made a renewed commitment to grow the investment in mental health services quicker than the NHS budget overall. This includes specialist suicide prevention work.

Getting help

One out of four of us will suffer from mental health issues at some point in our lives. The good news is that there are many different ways to seek help, and most people recover after a while. It's important to understand the types of help available and who can offer it.

You can seek assistance from a variety of places, including your GP (primary medical doctor for primary care) as well as your local health centre or a community mental health team. These teams are comprised of occupational therapists, nurses psychotherapists, psychotherapists and speech and language therapists who work with people who use the service. Depending on the type of help you require, you may be offered individual or group therapy.

You will be asked to fill out a form by your GP so they can refer you to a mental health professional in the community. They will also ask you to specify what type of assistance you require. You will then be seen by someone from a mental health team that may comprise a psychiatrist social worker or psychologist. In certain instances a clinical nurse specialist will conduct your assessment and treatment. If you are experiencing a crisis, you can contact the NHS 111 helpline for immediate assistance. If you already receive support for your mental health it is recommended to contact your primary team first, unless it's out of hours, on a weekend or a bank holiday.

The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health detailed plans to create multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals in the community that are connected to primary care networks. These teams will enhance the quality of the mental health services provided to those in crisis, and will provide assistance to patients in their homes and community rather than in hospitals.

The plan aims to make crisis services more accessible by reducing wait times and allowing more beds. It also proposed to introduce mental health transport vehicles and ensure that every ambulance has a mental health liaison nurse in their control rooms to improve the way that those suffering from a mental health crisis are assisted in emergencies.

Treatment options

The NHS offers a variety of treatment options for people suffering from mental health problems. GPs are usually able to treat minor conditions, but more severe illnesses will require the assistance of a specialist team. These teams work in community and primary mental healthcare services as well as psychiatric hospitals. There are also safe places where you can get help if you are feeling in crisis.

Talking therapies are among the most popular forms of treatment for anxiety and depression. Previously known as IAPT, these programs have seen the number of people who seek them increase each year since they were introduced in 2008. The NHS Long Term Plan has committed to expanding these services to 1.9 million people by 2023/2024.

Psychiatric medications are also a vital element of treatment. They can help alleviate symptoms by altering the way that chemicals function in your brain. They can also help reduce the effects of other treatments. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate medicine for you.

There are many different types of talking therapies, including individual therapy and group therapy. Some of these are delivered in person, whereas others can be done remotely. Some patients prefer to receive treatment in person, but that is a personal choice. There are a variety of charities which offer support groups and courses like Mind. The website contains a wealth of information that is trustworthy, but be aware of the fact that there are a lot of false or misleading statements that are posted on the internet regarding mental health issues.

The NHS is improving mental health care but it is struggling to meet demand. In the UK, there are 54 mental trusts. They receive the majority of funding for their services from clinical commissioning groups. private mental health care scotland are located in a specific region however, they may be contracted to provide national services.

A key issue is the insufficient resources to meet rising demand. There are concerns over the quality and availability of nurses and psychiatrists. The NHS is trying to improve these services by delivering more training and introducing new ways of working. It also introduces safer and more effective ways to treat people in crisis like mobile crisis teams, as well as safe spaces.

Helping you

Since the NHS was launched 70 years ago there have been a lot of positive changes for people with mental health issues. Treatment options have expanded and social barriers are breaking down. But there is still more to be done.

People experiencing a mental health crisis need to be able to get the assistance they require quickly and easily. That's why the NHS is putting in the effort to improve the services available to those who require them. We will ensure that every acute hospital does not have the mental health liaison service in A&E departments and inpatient wards by 2020/21, and that 70% of these services will meet the 'core 24' standard by 2023/24. Then we will work towards a 100% coverage rate after that.

We will also increase community services, including talking therapy, to offer support for hundreds of thousands of people with mental health conditions, whether they are severe or common. We will continue to work on the national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme so that more people can be treated by trained therapists quicker.

The NHS provides free, confidential helplines to anyone struggling with a mental health issue. Samaritans Mind and Rethink are some of the helplines available. These helplines are run by volunteers who provide the opportunity to talk in a secure environment or provide advice and information on how to manage your mental health issues.

There are also local organisations that can provide support and guidance to people who suffer from mental health issues. Self-help guides, coping techniques and other activities are available. Many of these organizations offer face-toface support groups to those who would prefer it.

For students, there's the University's Open Door Team which offers the opportunity to visit a counselling center for those feeling down or stressed. Nightline is a student counseling service that offers private listening as well as information and support from experienced volunteers. Charities like Mind and Rethink can provide many sources of information and support both on the internet and in local groups. They offer a variety of activities and courses ranging including mindfulness classes to art classes that can be beneficial for those suffering from mental health issues.

Making a referral

With mental health services under pressure, GPs have to make difficult choices about what specialist services they should refer patients to. The GP will consider the patient's medical background and refer them to services they believe will be able aid. They can send a referral either to an NHS trust, or to an independent provider.

A mental health professional will assess the referral to determine if it's appropriate or not. If the specialist isn't satisfied with the referral, they'll contact the GP to discuss their decision and provide the reasons. They could request the GP to change the referral or ask for more information.

Referrals to a local Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) may be made via the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS). The system permits GPs and other healthcare professionals to refer people to either a pre-mental health clinical assessment service or directly to an appointment with an outpatient. However not all CMHTs provide both options, and the system isn't able to be used for every kind of mental health referral.

A doctor may also decide to refer a person to a specialist community mental health service (CMT). They are typically run by a large local healthcare organisation or a hospital. CMTs can be a good option for people who wish to consult a qualified psychiatrist or psychologist but do not require inpatient treatment. They also offer an early intervention service, where a psychiatrist will work with a therapist to help a person overcome a crisis or increase their life quality.

One of the major challenges that CMTs CMT is to ensure that all referrals are assigned within the proper time frame. One of the issues is that a large number of referrals are considered urgent, even though they might not be. This can result in delays and over-working for those who aren't in a crisis.

To combat this problem, a few CMHTs have tried to establish more uniform standards for what constitutes a referral urgent. This has been accomplished through the use of the standardised referral forma that requires a referrer to determine if the case is urgent. The form includes a box that the referrer has to check to indicate if the referral is urgent.
