Apple Watch Fall Detection is a potentially life-saving feature that helps connect you to emergency services when you take a hard fall. It's available in every currently shipping Series 8 and newer watch.
It automatically calls emergency services if you don't respond within 60 seconds after falling.
Activating Fall Detection on your watch is easy, and it's one of the most helpful features in your Apple Watch arsenal. Here's how to enable it, and how to customize it so you can use it as best as possible.
The feature is automatically enabled for those 55 years of age and older, but it's also available to anyone 18 years of age or younger who wants to activate it. It's a valuable safety feature that has saved the lives of countless users.
You can turn it on or off in Settings, then select "Always on" if you want it on all the time. Or, you can choose "Only during workouts" to enable it only when you start a workout.
How it works
When your Apple Watch senses you've fallen, it taps you on the wrist with a buzz and sounds an alarm. Medical alert It then displays an alert that you can dismiss by pressing a button on your watch or tapping "I'm OK."
The alarm gets louder for 30 seconds, but if you don't respond or move after that, your Apple Watch will call emergency services for you.
How the system works
The device uses a combination of accelerometer and gyroscope data to detect a fall. This is a bit more complicated than the automatic sensors in many other fall detection devices.
