Sash windows can be severely damaged over time. Cosmetic damage could require replacement. However, functional problems like rattles or draughts are signs that a sash windows needs to be repaired.

Wood that is damaged or broken

Then, you can pry the stop out with an utility blade. Then, you can use a razor blade to cut off any nail heads sticking out of the back of the stop.

If yours doesn't have one you can make an access hole from scratch by cutting a rectangle in the jamb liners made of vinyl to the height of the stile of the sash. If your frame doesn't have one, you can create a new hole by cutting out an elongated rectangle from the jamb liner of vinyl to the height of the stile.

Sash Weights That Aren't Working

The two weights that pull the sash upwards and down may be separated from each other as time passes, resulting in the sash becoming jammed, or stuck in an open position. This is caused by worn out or broken cords for sash that must be replaced.

It is important to put down dust sheets everywhere possible during this repair project to prevent dirt or debris from getting on your furniture or carpet. This is especially important if you intend to lift and move the window during your work.

Start by carefully removing each of the staff beads from the frame on either side using a small, broad chisel. You will notice a groove running along each side of the sash that will eventually end with the knot hole in which the new cord for the sash will be put. Be sure to get rid of any knots in the old cord that are screwed or nailed into the hole.

Begin by replacing the top sash cord. To accomplish this you need to lower the sash slowly until it is in contact with the bottom sill. Hold it up with a thin piece of wood on either side of the frame. Otherwise it could fall on the floor, breaking the glass.

Then, you can remove the access panel from the frame in order to retrieve the sash cord as well as the weight. Once you have the sash weight, take the dado from the wood's edge and then insert the nail to secure it. In some instances, the damage caused by broken glass may necessitate a complete replacement of the window. The installation of new windows can be a costly and time-consuming home improvement task. In most cases, replacing individual broken window panes is a much more feasible option and is also less costly.

It is important to inspect the existing sash thoroughly before making any attempt to replace the glass. Once the glass is removed, it's recommended to give the wood a good coating of a homemade wood preservative. Mix equal amounts of mineral spirit and linseed to make the wood preservative. Once the mixture is mixed, apply the mixture on the sash's surface with a putty knife and allow it to dry completely. This will ensure that the new glass and sash are resistant to water and will last for a long time.

If the sash is in good shape, it's possible to repair it without taking off the glass. The first step is to take off the window stop, which is a vertical piece wood located over the stiles of the window frame. The window stop is fixed by a tiny pry-bar positioned over a putty blade with a stiff blade.
