As mudanças de forma da Lua são chamadas de FASES. quando ela aparece clara e bem redonda no céu, é denominada Lua cheia. Depois seu tamanho parece diminuir, dando início á fase minguante, ou Quarto minguante ("minguar' quer dizer tornar-se menor, diminuir). Quando a Lua quase desaparece no céu é chamada de Lua Nova. por fim, a Lua parece crescer novamente - Lua Crescente, ou Quarto Crescente - , até voltar á fase Cheia outra vez.
O intervalo de tempo para que a Lua passe por todas as suas fases é conhecido como LUNAÇÃO e dura, aproximadamente, 29 dias.
