The Most Hilarious Complaints We've Been Hearing About Door Repair
Door Hardware and Hinges - How to Repair Them

Over time, hinges and door hardware start to begin to show signs of wear. Fortunately, most problems can be repaired easily.

If a door rubs against the latch side, it's usually due to the fact that the bottom of the jamb's casing has moved or lost its nails and is no longer fixed securely. This can be fixed using shims.

Hinges

Door hinges are among the most frequently employed hardware in homes. Over time, they may become loose and begin to sag or hang crookedly. This can make it difficult to open or close the door and is a clear indication that the hinge screws on your door need repair.

The positive side is that many door hinge issues are easy to solve. You can utilize a few basic tools to reattach loose hinges in place, then tightening the screws and coat them with lubricant in order to stop further damage. If the issue is severe you may need to replace the hinges.

If your door hinges seem loose tap them gently with an hammer that is small. This will help raise the pin barrel, and then move it away from the cup part of the hinge. If the pin does not come loose, spray the hinge with penetrating oils and tap again. If the sagging hinge is on an exterior door, it can be fixed by using a c-clamp or a weight to secure the door in place while you attach the hinge.

The issue becomes more serious when the screw holes on a hinge start to wear out. This could cause a hinge to fall or leave a gap between the jamb of the door and the door. It can be more difficult to repair stripped screw holes, but with the right tools and perseverance, it's possible.

There are a variety of different kinds of hinges. The most popular is the mortise hinge, that is a mortised edge of the door and jamb. It is made from steel and can be either simple or ornate. It is most suitable for heavy doors and external doors.

Another kind of hinge is the flush hinge, which is a very lightweight option that is commonly used in residential applications. It can be mortised into the edge and then attached with decorative metal or wood trim pieces. This kind of hinge is often used on wooden gate entrances, barn & shed doors or garage doors.

Strike Plate

A strike plate is a metal plate that is positioned on the jamb of the door. It includes holes for the bolt to latch. When the bolt is inserted into the hole, it will then work to secure the door in place and keep it closed. However, like many hardware parts the strike plate may become loose or be misaligned.

This will often result in the latch not seated within the strike plate, which results in the latch not functioning. This is why using shims to aid in the latch seat would be a good idea. However, it's also possible that the strike plate has to be moved up or down. If this is the case a sharp chisel made of wood should be used to cut off some of the wood from the door jamb in order to allow the strike plate to move into place properly.

If adjusting the strike plate upwards or down does not fix the problem then it may be that the latch is hitting the strike plate above or below the the strike plate. To determine this, apply a strip of lipstick or similar mark on the latch and close the door. The lipstick will leave an impression wherever it comes in contact with the strike plate and by examining the marks you can see whether the latch is touching the strike plate above or below the hole. If it is above then an extended screw might be required, if it is below, the strike plate must be removed and enlarged using the help of a file.

A lip strike plate that has an extended lip is another option. This is an easy DIY solution that can be installed on all doors. It allows the latch to be positioned further into the strike plate and therefore prevent the door from being kicked in. These are available in different sizes and finishes to match existing hardware. Commercial locksmiths are able to install, replace or repair strike plates for your business. They can also provide other security services to help you protect your home or business from burglars.

Sash

The sash is an element of the window which slides between up and down. The sash is held in position by two weights on either side. Each weight has an extension cord that pulls the sash upwards and down according to the need. If the cords break you must string them up again. It's a simple procedure.

You will need to remove first the top sash and its cords. You can then remove the bottom sash and set it aside. The counterweights will keep it in position while you string new cords. Once the cords have been strung you can put them on the stop at the bottom and then reinstall the sash.

Most old sash frames use pegs to join the mortise and tenon joints. this requires a special tool that has pin punch and hammer to remove them. Modern sash windows could have replaced the pegs with glue, but you'll still have to take the window apart. Take out the beads that are parting and take out the upper sash, along with its cords or chains and then remove the hardware of the sash.

When upvc window repair are ready to put your sash back together make sure you first lubricate the wheels of the pulleys. Clean the sash components as well as the frame and apply wood hardener if necessary. Then, you can paint or stain the components.

You could also re-paint or repaint the window, especially in the event of cracks or black spots in the wood. You can also add draughtproofing to help prevent air leaks.

The parting beads require to be replaced. They are typically painted shut, and some have screws or nails to hold them in the correct position. Verify that the sash's Horns (the wood strips that are inserted between the overlapping frames) are in place before installing the sash. Attach the stop bead to the sash and angle it downwards. Then work to the bottom of the sash. If the sash is unable to fall freely, you can try to pull it up and down using your hands to locate the hitch. If you're unable to locate it, make use of a nail gun or short screws to reconnect the stops.

Stiles

Stiles are vertical pieces of wood on either side of the door. Rails are horizontal pieces that run along the bottom and top edges of a door. They are used to hold the panels. The panels give the door their appearance. They are made of different materials and can be made with an elongated or flat profile.

The frame of the door is made up of rails and stiles but it is also possible to build a frame out of one piece of wood. This type of construction could be used in commercial projects. It is called a flush-door.

A framed door might be more difficult to handle than a flush-mounted one, but the end result is more attractive. It is a solid construction that is resistant to the transfer of sound and allows for more design flexibility. The number of lites and panels for instance, can be adjusted depending on the style of the design.

Stile and rail door frames can be made of wood, composite material or steel. Masonite Architectural offers a number of options for doors, including the Aspiro and Cendura line of doors. Whatever the material, these doors are typically heavy and require a lot of care to ensure they can be closed and opened smoothly. The force too much exerted can cause damage to wood and weaken the structural integrity.

When working on a stile and rail door, it is essential to make use of the right tools. A router fitted with a coping-bit may be used to trim the stiles to precisely fit the rail tenons. However, you will need to have some other tools on hand as well. These include a pair of saw horses, some scrap wood, and pipes clamps that are heavy-duty like pipe clamps. It is best to begin with a test piece to determine the amount of pressure you can put on the joint.

To prevent the possibility of a lock conflict with doors with lites the dimensions of the mullion or center panel should be increased. Also, it is a good idea for the cross rail and mid rail to be enlarged in size. This will increase the strength of the structure and prevent the door from warping or breaking as a result of environmental or humidity.
