How To Explain Door Repair To Your Grandparents
Door Hardware and Hinges - How to Repair Them

Over time, hinges and door hardware will begin to show signs of wear. Most issues can be fixed easily.

If a door rubs against the latch side, it's typically due to the bottom portion of the jamb's casing has moved or lost its nails and isn't fixed securely. It is possible to fix this using shims.

Hinges

Door hinges are among the most frequently used hardware you can find in your home. As such, they can get loose in time and then hang crookedly or sag. This can make it difficult to open or close the door. This is a telltale sign that your door hinge screws require repair.

The positive side is that many door hinge issues are easy to fix. You can use the tools you need to reattach loose hinges into place, tighten the screws and then coat them with lubricant to avoid further damage. If the problem is serious you may need to replace the hinges.

If your hinges for your door are loose, they should be gently tapped using a hammer to bring the pin barrel up and away from the cup part of the hinge. If the pin isn't loose, you can spray it with penetrating oil, then tap again. If the sagging hinge is on an exterior door, it can be fixed by using a c-clamp or weight to hold the door in place while you re-attach the hinge.

The issue becomes more serious when the screw holes on a hinge start to strip out. This could cause the hinge to fall off or leave an opening between the door and jamb. Stripped screw holes can be a little more difficult to fix but it is achievable with the right tools and patience.

There are many kinds of hinges. The mortise hinge is the most popular because it is affixed into both the edge of the jamb and the door. It is usually made of steel and is available in either an ornate or simple basic design. It is best suited to heavy doors or external doors.

The flush hinge is another type of hinge that is lightweight and is used primarily in residential applications. It can also be mortised into the edge of the door, and can be secured using a decorative metal or wood trim piece. This kind of hinge can be found on wooden gates, shed and barn doors, or garage doors.

Strike Plate

A strike plate is an metal plate that is placed on the jamb of the door. It includes holes for the bolt to latch. When the bolt is inserted into the hole it is then used to hold the door and keep it closed. However, like many hardware parts the strike plate can come out of alignment or become loose.

If this happens, it will often cause the latch to not fit within the strike plate and thus not work. This is why using shims to aid in the latch seat is a good idea. However, it's also possible that the strike plate requires to be moved upwards or downwards. If this is the situation, a sharp wood chisel is recommended to take some of the wood from the door jamb in order to allow the strike plate to move into place properly.

If adjusting the strike plate up or down doesn't fix the problem then it may be that the latch is hitting the strike plate either above or below the the strike plate. To test this, put a strip of lipstick or similar mark on the latch and close the door. The lipstick will leave an impression wherever it comes in contact with the strike plate and by examining the marks, you can tell whether the latch is touching the strike plate above or below the hole. If the latch is above, an extended bolt might be required. If it's below, then you will have to take off the strike plate, and then expand it with the help of a file.

A lip strike plate that has an extended lip is a different option. This is an DIY solution that can be installed on most doors. It lets the latch sit deeper into the strike plate and prevents the door from being kicked. These are available in a variety of lengths, and you can choose from various finishes to match your existing hardware. Commercial locksmiths can help install or replace strike plates for your business. They can also offer other security services to assist you in protecting your home or business from intruders.

Sash

The sash is the portion of the window that slides upwards and downwards. It is held in place by two weights - one on each side of the frame, each of which has a cord attached to it that pulls it up and back down as required. If the cords break they will require you to tie them again. Fortunately, this is fairly easy.

You'll need to take off first the top sash as well as its cords. Then, you can pull the bottom sash free and put it aside, letting the good counterweights hold it in place as you string the new cords. After the cords are strung then you can replace the stop at the bottom and reinstall the sash.

To join the mortise and tenon joints, the majority of sash frames used pegs. This requires a special tool that includes pin punches and a hammer. Newer sash windows may have replaced the pegs with glue, but you'll require disassembling the window. Take out the beads that are parting and take out the upper sash as well as its chains or cords and take out the hardware of the sash.

When you are ready to reassemble your sash, lubricate first the wheels on the pulleys. Clean the sash and frame components and apply a wood hardener if needed. Then, paint or stain the frame components.

You can also repaint or re-paint your windows, especially if it has black spots or cracks. You can also add draught proofing, which will ensure that air leaks are not leaking.

The parting beads need to be reinstalled. They are usually painted shut, and some are fitted with screws or nails that hold them in their place. Make sure that the sash horns (the wood strips between overlapping Sashes) are in place before installing the sash. Reattach the stop bead and angle it downwards. Then, you can work through the sash. If the sash does not fall freely, you can try to pull it up and down with your hands until you locate the hitch. If you are unable to locate it then make use of a nail gun or short screws to reattach the stops.

Stiles

Stiles are the vertical pieces of wood that go on either side of the door. Rails are horizontal pieces that run across the top and bottom edge of a door. They hold the panels. The panels provide the door with a look. They are made of various materials and can have a flat profile or a raised profile.

windows repair is made up of bars and stiles however, a single piece of wood can also be used. This kind of construction can be used for commercial projects. It is called flush-door.

A framed door may be more difficult to handle than a flush-mounted door however the end result is more attractive. It is a sturdy, long-lasting construction that impedes noise transfer and offers greater design flexibility. The number of lites and panels, for example can be changed depending on the style of the design.

Stile and rail doors can be crafted out of wood, composite or metal. Masonite Architectural offers a number of options, including the Aspiro and Cendura line of doors. These doors are heavy and require special care to open and close smoothly. If you force the door too hard, it can cause damage to the wood and weaken the strength of the door.

When working on a stile and rail door, it is crucial to use the right tools. A router that has a coping tool can assist in trimming the stiles precisely to fit the tenons on the rails. You will also need some other tools. These include a pair saw horses, a few scrap wood, and pipes clamps that are heavy-duty like pipe clamps. Start with a small piece of wood to determine the amount of pressure that can be applied to the joint.

On doors with lites, the dimensions of the mullion or center panel must be increased to prevent a lite lock conflict. Additionally, it is a good idea for the mid rail and cross rail to be enlarged in dimensions. This will increase the strength of the structure and will prevent the door from warping or cracking as a result of humidity or environmental factors.
