10 Things We All We Hate About Railroad Settlement Cll
Benzene, Butadiene, and Other Carcinogens on the Railroad

Many railroad employees are exposed to benzene, butadiene and other carcinogens during the job. If you have developed a serious illness like leukemia, you may be entitled to compensation.

railroad shoulder injury settlements can occur in the lymphatic or bone marrow. Chronic lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) is one of the four main types of leukemia in adults.

Benzene

Benzene can be inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. It is a basic by-product of oil that is used in the production of nylons, plastics and synthetic fibers. It is also used in lubricants dyes paints, detergents, pesticides, and other drugs. It is a known cancerous substance that causes leukemia as well as other cancers such as acute myelogenous lymphoma (AML), myelodysplastic disorders, and lymphomas.

Railroad workers are exposed to benzene from the use of mineral spirits, solvents, and degreasers. They are also exposed to exhaust fumes and diesel fuel when working on locomotives, freight cars and other railway equipment. Because of this exposure, railroad workers are at a higher risk of developing chronic leukemia.

A number of epidemiologic studies have found an increase in the risk of leukemia with an increase in exposure to benzene. A review of 22 recent studies provided summary estimates of the effect of benzene on AML, Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia(ALL) and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia(CLL).

The meta-analysis reveals that occupational exposure to benzene increases the chance of developing these leukemias. However the results for AML and CLL were weaker than for ALL. This could be due to a lower level of reporting for these subgroups, but also to a lack of dose-response interactions that increase exposure. The meta-analysis did not find any evidence of bias in the publication.

Asbestos

Asbestos is an amorphous mineral that has been used in a multitude of industrial products. Its resistance against fire, heat and corrosion makes it a perfect material for railroad locomotives as well as other equipment. However, asbestos poses danger to health when workers work with it. If exposed to the material asbestos fibers, they break down into microscopically thin particles that are then airborne. They can then be breathed in and then lodge in a person's lungs. These can lead to various serious diseases, including mesothelioma.

Asbestos fibers can irritate the lining of the lung when they enter the lungs. This irritation can lead to an increase in collagen which hardens with time and creates pleural plaques. This condition can lead to chest pain and breathing difficulties.

Fibrosis is a different type of lung damage which can be caused by asbestos exposure. This scar tissue interferes in the ability to breathe. This condition can be fatal if left untreated.

If you are a railroad worker who was diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, seek out a FELA attorney immediately. A knowledgeable mesothelioma lawyer can assist you in filing an application for compensation. In order to be successful in a claim you must prove that your exposure to a toxic substance during the job contributed to the development of your disease. FELA lawyers often collaborate with industrial safety experts called industrial hygienists to review substances in the workplace of railroads and determine if the company was following proper workplace safety procedures.

Diesel Exhaust

Diesel exhaust is one of the numerous carcinogenic fumes and materials that railroad workers are exposed to on a daily basis. Excessive exposure to diesel exhaust has been linked to lung cancer, as well as other serious occupational diseases that affect railroad workers, including mesothelioma, pulmonary fibrosis and others. Inhaling engine exhaust and particulates can cause long-term health problems that may be difficult to treat.

Diesel fuel is used in locomotives, and the cabin of a locomotive is tiny with no ventilation. Railroad workers may be exposed to diesel exhaust through breathing it in the cab, and then dragging it back on themselves and their clothes when they leave the cab. Railroad workers who work in shops, yards, and yards could also be exposed to diesel exhaust, since they are often in contact with locomotives and train equipment.

Diesel exhaust is believed to be a source of carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds that can be absorbed into bloodstream. These chemicals can affect the blood and bone marrow and can cause damage to the respiratory tract. Researchers found that people who were exposed to diesel exhaust for a long period of time were at the highest chance of developing lung cancer.

Lung cancer mortality was significantly higher in railroad workers exposed to diesel exhaust, even after eliminating smoking-related deaths and other factors. The Lyon Firm is investigating a number of claims made by railroad workers who became sick from frequent exposure to diesel exhaust and solvents, as well as other industrial toxic exposures.
