Replacing Your Volkswagen Key
If you have lost your Volkswagen key, you will need to replace it. The process of getting a replacement from the dealer will cost you money and will take time to wait for it to arrive.
It's tempting to purchase second-hand VW keys on the internet or in shops that sell them. However, these are likely not going to be capable of disarming the vehicle's standard immobiliser system.
Battery Replacement
Modern electronic key fobs provide more convenience and performance in comparison to manual keys, however they'll eventually have a problem with battery life or cease to function over time. If your VW's key fob ceases responding to press buttons or you notice it takes longer than usual to get the lock/unlock buttons to work, it may be a sign that the battery is depleted and requires replacing.
You'll require an incredibly small screwdriver (preferably a flat-head one wrapped in tape to keep from scratching the fob) and a new 3V CR2032 battery for the job. Flip open the key by pressing the metal button, and look for the battery panel of the key, which is typically found just beneath the Volkswagen logo on the fob. Press the panel to eject it, then press down on the button on the key fob again to put the new battery, ensuring that the positive side is facing downward.
After you're done you're done, put the key fob back together. It's now ready to go for your next trip in Phoenixville or King of Prussia. The Suntrup Volkswagen team is happy to assist you with any queries regarding car care at home, like how to change your cabin air filter or tires. Emergency Key or Bayonet Key
The good news is that older VW models come with an emergency key or bayonet key. These keys don't need any power to unlock your car or turn the motor on when you hold them below the ignition.
The disadvantage is that you don't have keyless entry or push button start capability. This is why it's important to have a spare Volkswagen key.
If your VW key isn't working properly, it may not be due to a dead battery, but instead, it's because it needs to be programmed. The good news is that you don't need to take your car to the dealer to have this done. This procedure can be completed by a locksmith for automotive use.
You'll need to have a few things in your possession to program the car fob. First you'll need to know the year and model of Volkswagen key you own. You'll require a copy of the registration or title for your vehicle.
Having these documents can help you save time at the dealership when you need to order your new VW key. You can then take your vehicle to the auto shop to have it programmed. In most cases, it's an easy procedure that shouldn't take more than an hour. Once the process is complete, you can drive away from the dealership in Pittsford or Webster with a functioning key again.
Key Fob Replacement
Modern VWs have key fobs that aren't simply keys - they're high-tech anti-theft devices. When you press the button on your VW keyfob it transmits the code that tells your car it's the correct key to unlock and begin. The key fobs also include the chip that's used control features such as remote lock and push-button start.
If your Volkswagen key fob isn't working properly, it may just need an upgrade to the battery. If this is the situation you can tell by how often you have to press the lock/unlock buttons. If you find yourself pressing the lock/unlock button several times, it is likely that the battery needs to be replaced.
The buttons on your Volkswagen keyfob might be stuck or loosened. Since a key fob is likely to spend long periods of time being tossed around, this is not uncommon and is often repaired by gently tearing the fob before trying to manually adjust the buttons.
If the issue is more severe, you'll need to bring the key fob to an expert locksmith to get it replaced. If the key fob you have a transponder chip the dealer will have to reprogram the computer in your car to recognize it again and this can be costly. A locksmith for cars is able to reprogram your computer and reduce the cost of a dealership visit.
Transponder Chip Replacement
The keys for most VWs built after 1995 are equipped with a transponder. The chip deactivates the cars standard immobiliser system, which makes it impossible to start without the correct key. If you've lost your key or it was not working, you'll need a new Volkswagen key.
The good news is that locksmiths can cut you the new key you need for your Volkswagen vehicle, no matter the kind of key you used (chip intelligent fob "push to start" remote or regular non-transponder keys). If you don't have spare keys, they can make one. You'll also need to provide proof of ownership (vehicle title, registration certificate, etc.). ).
Call us immediately if you are miles away from your home and can't locate your Volkswagen key. We will send a mobile locksmith to unlock your VW without causing damage to the door. This will save you time and money.

We provided him with an upfront estimate and an accurate time of arrival, and within 20 minutes, a locksmith showed up at his car and got to work.
